Class/Challenge/House Pride: Charms
House: Gryffindor
Project Name: Personalized Cross Stitches
Project Page Link (if available): N/A
Brief Description: I don't find cross stitch particularly confusing, but creating the patterns for the people on graphing paper did prove a bit trickier than first imagined. I used Martha Stewart's tutorial and templates. The kids in particular were difficult and I still think making a three-year-old is impossible. No matter what, the kids came out too tall or all looking the same age. My one attempt at downsizing really just made the kid look skinnier (which he actually is, so it turned out ok). Anyway, the recipients of these two stitched families were very happy with the outcomes, and my son keeps asking when I'm going to make him. I think I know what I'm doing for family X-mas ornaments next year. I think I'll start now!

Brief Description: Both my mom and my grandmother received these towels for X-mas this year. I got the pattern free online here.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Holiday Recipe Challenge
House: Gryffindor
Project Name: Stuffed Artichokes Cartisano
Project Page Link (if available): N/A
Brief Description: These remind me of my mom, which remind her of her grandmother. My mom and I both made them this year, and since we weren't together for the holidays, it helped us feel a little closer to both be making the same family recipe.
Project Picture:

Recipe

2 cups plain breadcrumbs
1/2 cup parsley
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
1 tablespoon minced onion
1-2 cloves garlic
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
4 large artichokes
4 tablespoons olive oil

Mix breadcrumbs, parsley, cheese, onion, salt, and pepper. Clean and prepare artichokes. Spoon mixture into opened artichoke leaves. Place in saucepan and sprinkle with oil. Add 1-2 inches of water and garlic cloves. Cover and cook on low 2-4 hours until leaves fall off. (This is actually more detail than my mom's written recipe, which is based on memories of her grandmother making them. I still had a million questions while making them!).

January Extra Credit

Introducing the Gryffindor Lionalong!

*Gryffindor Students Only Please*

Through the month of January, Gryffindor students who incorporate a lion in any way into their coursework will be awarded one Gryffindor Ruby. This "lionalong" should not disrupt students from completing their regular coursework, but rather should serve as a source of added inspiration. Students may incorporate as many lions as they wish into their coursework all through January. There is no limit to the number of rubies a student may achieve. If students incorporate more than one lion into one course, they will receive one ruby for each lion created/crafted. For example, if you create three lions for Arithmancy, you will receive course credit and THREE rubies. Lions created outside regular coursework will still receive ruby recognition, but will not be eligible for course credit or house points. As Head of Gryffindor House, I will be magically tracking the number of rubies achieved by each individual Gryffindor student during the month of January only to determine the next Gryffindor of the Month. Good luck and happy lion-ing.

**Special thanks to pinkleo for this month's Extra Credit idea**

157  Child Drawing Ornament Tutorial in Winter Holidays by Abbeeroad on: December 18, 2012 07:36:57 AM
If you're a last minute gift maker like me, here's a quick, easy, and personalized way to turn your kid's drawings into ornaments!

Materials Needed:

See-through top fabric (I used muslin)
Backing fabric
Fabric marker
Polyfill
~8 inches of ribbon
Scissors
Ruler
Kiddo's drawing

First, cut both your top fabric and backing fabric to about 4 in x 4 in:

Next, place the top fabric on top of the drawing and trace the image onto the fabric using a fabric pen:

Easy, peasy.

Next, layer the fabric pieces right sides together with the ribbon sandwiched in the middle. Make sure the ends of the ribbon are at the top of the drawing so it hangs right side up after sewing.

Sew around the edge, leaving about 2 inches open at the bottom for turning right side out:

Turn right side out:

Stuff with polyfill and hand sew the opening at the bottom:

You can personalize it by adding names, dates, drawing titles, whatever!

I'm sure there's a million things you could do with the drawing once you got it on fabric. I hope this inspires you this holiday season!!

Thanks for looking Smiley

Abbeeroad...you makes me want to try tie-dye so hard... but I'm scared of the messyness with my kids!

haha...I am almost always dyeing something. It's kind of a problem around here...

In the summer I let DJ play with my dyes. Here's a pic of him squirting some dye on a sheet I turned into a wrap skirt.

It's tough in the winter, especially here at my in-laws house (they are a bit neater than I usually am), but in the summer I just stick him in some old clothes and let him have at it! It's probably easier with only one kiddo, though Wink

FiberAlchemist - wow! so many awesome projects! And thanks for the stenciling tips! Mine have not been coming out as clean either lately. Not sure why. I'm also having trouble with some pieces (like the center of an "A" for example) coming up when I paint over the stencil. I'm not working in an ideal environment at the moment, maybe it's because I'm using a towel on the table to iron on instead of a board? Anyway, everything came out great. I love the fox scarf.

pottermouth - I love that owl pattern. Great ear protection!

WhistleFish - excellent arithmancy! I really like the finished product. It has a nice "manly" feel to it, something I struggle with sometimes!

SKooKuM - cool crayon art! I'm intimidated by it, myself!

FreakieGeekie - Super cute kitty!! The black thread does contrast nicely!!
