11  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Re: Calypso bulbosa on: April 07, 2016 11:36:26 AM
Thanks for the feedback Patraw and pottermouth Smiley

Patraw the absence of detail throughout most of the piece, save for the figure, was actually my intended effect. I want my painting to instill more of an emotional response, and have the viewer get lost in their own imagination. I didn't want to tell the story of the figure, per se, but have the viewer create their own. With that being said, the quote by Paulo Coelho and the name of the painting (Calypso bulbosa) elude to the fact that both flowers and people are beautiful and fragile, and neither should be possessed Smiley hopefully I have achieved the desired effect for both of you!

'Calypso bulbosa'
Acrylic on canvas

People give flowers as presents because flowers contain the true meaning of love. Anyone tries to possess a flower will have to watch its beauty fading. But if you simply look at a flower on a field, you will keep it forever, because the flower is part of the evening and the sunset and the smell of damp earth and the clouds on the horizon. - Paulo Coelho, Brida

This piece was inspired by a drawing I did recently during a live model class, and also the coming of spring. My style of artwork is usually fantasy mixed with realism and lots of detail! One thing I loved about the live model class is the limited time frame to draw a figure so my sketches became much more expressive. I wanted to try the same thing out in a painting, and instead of focusing on small details create something more emotional and expressive. I'm pretty happy with how she turned out!

Critiques are much appreciated Smiley

Cool repurposing of secondhand garments!  I think this pattern/design would also work well as one of those red tree pandas.

That's a good idea Patraw! I think a wolf would also be cute.

We love him very much - he is currently tucked up in bed with Ebbon (Cool being read to.
Because all foxes like stories Smiley

That's the cutest thing Cheesy

Beautiful Satyr, takes my breath away!
And lovely gloves! hard to tell, are they knitted and felted? love the cute little mouse face. Also love the fox!

Hey emilywilde! The mittens are actually made of upcycled sweaters Smiley even the little mouse faces are made from a wool sweater I felted.

I'm so happy your package made it to its destination blu! Those slippers are adorable. I love the magnet as well! Thanks for hosting this swap, it was so enjoyable Cheesy

Thanks everyone Cheesy

alwaysinmyroom there are so many options out there! I would say sweaters work the best for mittens. They are a bit more challenging to use for stuffies, I would definitely suggest using a thicker knit or fleece. The rust coloured sweater I used was on the thin side, but I couldn't pass up that lovely speckled colour Tongue

I made this little guy for P_E_S_T in the Woodland Creature Swap. I used secondhand sweaters from the local thrift shop as my fabric. It was a challenge (the fabric was uncooperative to say the least!) but I'm really happy with how it turned out in the end! It has definitely opened my eyes to the joys and benefits of re-purposed clothing!

Let me know what you all think Cheesy

Oh man, I sent her a large package for a holiday swap a year ago and it took more than a month to get to her. I had paid for tracking so I saw it travel from me (in Oregon) down to California, over to China (I think). Where it sat for nearly a week before traveling back to California then all the way back up to me. The mistake was realized and it was to her in less than a week from here. Good grief! Hang in there!

That sounds way too nerve wracking! I hope mine hasn't gone on a similar journey Sad Tongue
