81  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Re: 2013 Christmas Tree Along! on: December 22, 2013 07:06:50 AM
What a beautiful selection of Christmas tree's.  We too have a number of Nativities dotted about the house as a gentle reminder of the reason for the season. I am currently enjoying this on You Tube.  It moves me to tears each time I see it.        Merry Christmas to everyone no matter how you celebrate.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Zh-yR0pbmU

I give talks and demonstrations so keep a couple of each thing that I make to add to my display.  When I do a session in school I simply leave the one I have made as an example with them.  I know what you mean about making things that will end up in the rubbish but I figure that everything will end up there one day and if we can reduce the amount we create in the first place by reusing then we are at least part way there.  Besides which, as a mum I know that most mums have a box full of the things that their kids made tucked away in the attic  :-)

84  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Re: Salt dough on: December 19, 2013 10:01:40 AM
They seem to be rock hard but I haven't tried snapping one in half. I kind of figure that I wouldn't buy a piece of jewellery and then try to snap it in half.  Besides which this is just meant to be a fun project for kids to make. The first few that I made I baked in the oven but they kind of bubbled up and blistered.  These ones I have spread out in front of my log burner and turned them over frequently. It does get very hot on the hearth so I think they have 'cooked'.  I intend to make a big batch of them and once they are dry they will make great crafting resources for the kids to paint or stick things on.

I have been playing around with salt dough and a cookie cutter.  These are big and chunky at about 3x2 inches give or take.

You have just taken me back nearly thirty years.  I sewed these in all colours for my kids when they were small.  I even learned to line the the whole thing  including the pockets with nice warm brushed cotton.  I made the legs extra long and just rolled them up a bit .  I can start all over again making them for my grandaughter now.

congrats--you have inspired a lot of us!

Thank you... that is a lovely thing to say.  I am always adding new stuff to my blog and will happily type up instructions for anyone who is interested in using recycled stuff to craft with. Lets all do our bit to keep it out of the landfill if we can.
