1  Sewing machine recommendations for thick knitted toys? in Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions by sansgil on: August 11, 2013 06:53:07 AM
I'm very new to sewing machines and wondering if it's possible to use a machine with chunky yarn to get a seamless looking finish as close as possible to hand sewing?

I'm making a series of knitted toys (made from hand and machine knitted panels for chunky, size 10 UK needles). So far I've been sewing all the panels together by hand which gives a lovely finish that looks seamless and has little-to-no puckering where the two sides of the fabric have been brought together. (Attached are images of the finished seams and flat fabric)

As I'm now making quite a lot of these toys I'm looking for some ways to speed things up and require less time-intense hand sewing.

Is there a specific sewing machine or type of machine that might work. I have an old hand cranked Singer sewing machine but so far it just jams the machine up every time I try to sew yarn this thick (as the foot of the sewing machine isn't able to move up that high).

**** can't embedd the images yet so here's a link to them on Craftster ***
