21  Re: Fiber Friday January 21, 2011 in Spinning: Completed Projects by The Angry Hippie on: January 21, 2011 04:06:23 PM
Ah, such beautiful yarns this week!
Untouchable-Amazing color combinations.  I think Navajo plying was the perfect choice for the purple.

Jexx-Loving your core spun, the colors look fabulous plied against each other.  As far as info on core spinning, i didn't find much when i went looking.  Just the bare basics on how to and a couple videos on you tube.  There's a novelty and art yarn group on rav that might have some helpful tips on core spinning.  I know they have an ongoing art yarn FO thread i love.

My week:

I have this compulsive tendency to overfill bobbins. There's a little voice inside of me that's like "i bet u could get a couple more yards on there". . ."just one more yard". . ."well u can't start a new bobbin now you're almost done".

Been Drinking-wire core-everything

I also discovered that i'd unknowingly made a batt.   Cheesy

Jexx-  I love the third one as well.  Congrats on the wheel:)  What kind is it?  Also what luck on the years worth of fiber, i'm seriously jealous.  I can't wait to see what she sends you.

Puppy- I hated spinning hemp as well Cheesy It's such a pain and in the end you spent hours of your life making jute u could have bought for 69 cents at the store.

Here's my week

Tangerine- bamboo/merino

Alpaca Silk

I really like how these last two turned out.

Beau Rve-merino

23  Re: Better/tighter plying? in Spinning: Discussion and Questions by The Angry Hippie on: January 08, 2011 05:18:33 PM
Adding more spin to the single and during plying will give you a tighter ply.   Another thing that plays into a tight looking ply is the fiber.  Some fiber just will not ply tight and plump, mostly cellulose fibers but even some wools.  Also a vigorous wash to set helps to plum the ply, i find this especially true with merino.
This isn't a very good example but it's the only i have atm.
