1  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / How do I wash my afghan???? on: April 04, 2007 05:57:11 PM
Hello wise ones,
I am working on a multi colored afghan, using Brown Sheep's Cotton Fleece yarn.  It's 80% cotton, 20% merino wool.  The washing directions say to add vinegar to the initial wash and rinse, does this keep the colors from bleeding?  I am worried about the colors bleeding on to other lighter colors, since the afghan is many different colors.  Should I just never wash it? lol.  yuck.  any suggestions, or experiences with this would be MUCH appreciated!

Gracias,
knottydottie
2  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / What yarn should I use for an afghan? on: March 27, 2007 10:55:03 PM
Hello crafty people,
I am wanting to make an afghan (knitted or crocheted) that will be good for warm weather use.  It is for a friend of mine who's deployed to iraq and so he just wants something lightweight and comfy, that won't be itchy and is somewhat breathable.  Could anyone offer some suggestions on types of yarn I might try using?  Synthetic? Cotton?  blends?  I really have no idea, and I want to make it functional for him and still something comfy to curl up with.  It would  need to be something that could be thrown into the washing machine and survive.  Also, i was considering doing part of it in a camo yarn of some kind, so any tips relating to camo yarn would be great too. I was thinking that if I used a pattern that created some gaps in the stitch design, it might help make it breathable, does that make sense?  Pattern suggestions are also welcome, lol.  basically I just need some brainstorming help!

DETAILS OF SWAP:
We've had the "Winged Creatures Swap"  and the "Forest Friends Swap", so to pay homage to our slimy, flippered and mysterious lovelies of the sea, I decided we needed an Ocean Friends Swap!  Choose a creature of the sea, sand, or beach (seagulls would technically qualify if they are really your thing) and have a fellow craftster make you 1 large crafted item using that animal for a theme.  There will be 3 weeks of crafting time, and only 1 sendout, so the idea is that we'd all make 1 really fabulously awesome item.  (obviously sets of more than one thing, like a jewelry set or a set of embroidered dinner napkins would qualify as 1 large item)  Newbies will be partnered up with other newbies, and everyone else will be matched up based on your questionaires.

***This swap is actually sort of a Sea Swap 2.... I just realized!  duh. stupid me for not searching prior swaps better!  Jaami organized the first one, and there is a link to the gallery in the "Inspirational Links" below.

6  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / OCEAN FRIENDS SWAP on: July 13, 2006 11:40:43 PM
So I know that animals are a huge theme here on craftster, and swaps like the "Forest Friends Swap" have been widely popular.  I've also been noticing my own, as well as others, interest in ocean creatures as crafting themes.  Creatures like octupi, jellyfish, squid, seahorses, sharks, mollusks, and many others, have recently been popping up a lot in people's likes and "wists".  So how about we dedicate a whole swap to them?  I am sort of over my obsession with long drawn out secretive swaps where you send 3 or 4 different things at different times, and am all for spending a longer period of time crafting 1 uber fantastic quality item.  Everyone would sign up stating their preferred ocean creature of choice, and then I would partner everyone up, and we'd send 1 large crafted item based upon the person's wants/likes/etc.  I am thinking 3 weeks of crafting time, to give us all enough time to create something really awesome.

anyone interested?

8  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Owl & Flying Squirrel Cuffs, Oh My!! on: April 06, 2006 09:26:38 PM
I made these for the ongoing wish swap and I love how they turned out so much, I thought I'd post pics over here in the non swapping threads!  They are inkjet printed iron on's that i ironed onto a canvas/cotton fabric and then backed with felt.  I like to think of them as my Predator vs. Prey cuff set!

The light was a tad bright the day i took these pics, but they are the color of meltaway mints, bright pink and seafoam green!

Any comments much appreciated.

10  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / The Freedom & Ecstacy of the Penguin!! on: March 12, 2006 04:50:48 PM
So like everyone else in the world, i was terribly moved by March of the Penguins, and the durabilty and strength of these awkward creatures!  So i've had penguins on the brain for awhile now, and i got this silly idea to create a painting with the theme: The Freedom & Ecstacy of the Penguin  Much like the beloved red-hooded sweatshirt song by Adam Sandler, this little penguin has his red winged hang-glider.  I used felt, a scrap of fabric for the cloud, acrylics and some gel medium for texture, and part of a paper clip for the handle on the hang-glider.  i really loved how it turned out, it reminds me of a children's book illustration, so i had to frame it and now it adorns my kitchen wall!

Just wanted to share some humor!  Grin
