thanks gals!  i ran out of black and went to the store to get more.  i bought it and after a couple of beers, lost it.  still haven't found it.  but before i realized that i had lost it, i picked up the darkest blue i have and was going to town on this thing with that.  i didn't notice and i hoep no one else does either.  ha!

i'm pretty proud of it, but i definitely would have liked to have had more time with it.  between working full time and being in a very intense full time academic program, i'm surprised i even got this done.

thanks again for all the nice words.  the family quilt rocks.  it's a pretty simple thing to do, too.  we all get our squares in the spring or summer (yes...procrastination runs deep in m'veins.) and we have until november-ish to send it back.  then my sis-in-law sews it together.  it's a cute tradition.  you all should start it for your families.  Smiley
6  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / i embroidered a whale. a whole whale!! on: December 08, 2008 04:29:07 PM
it's time for our annual family quilt again.  my sister-in-law sends us all a little square of muslin, gives us a theme, and then we're to do whatever we want.  then she sews the whole ding danged thing together.

last year (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=208356.msg2229693#msg2229693), the theme was places.  and this is what i came up with:

this year, the theme is water.  and this is what i came up with:

it's based on a pacific northwest indian idea of a whale in a totem pole.  i pretty much winged the design and pattern.  i wish i had more time to put more effort into it.  i would have put more "characters" around the whale and probably embroidered the white space.  i wish i hadn't added the blue, also.  i did the red first and really liked how the red and black worked together, but i was afraid it would be too boring.  oh well.  in the end, i dig it.  here are some closer shots:

happy embroidering!!  Smiley

i would totally do M & S, or overlap and interlock them like MunLTstmpr designed/suggested.  i wouldn't worry about tradition or protocol if it means that you'll be stressed out about it.  maybe that's just me, but i say do what makes you most comfortable.

congrats and have fun!!  Smiley

p.s. i got my degree in geography and believe it or not, it's a B.A.  arts?  really?
