Years ago I managed to keep a leaf that one of the children picked, supple and coloured by leaving it in glycerine for about two weeks...it lasted for years ! could be worth a try for this project. All you would need is a small jar or vase and a little bit of stem for the leaf to soak up the glycerine.
I'm going to give it a try.
