Have you tried the 101 thread applique book?  I know our public library has that one..

And most of the fridgie patterns would probably suit your needs as well.

As for the ying yang symbol I don't remember one in thread or fridgie however there are some joined ring patterns for granny squares that you might be able to size down to your needs.
I can give it a whirl if you like. 

How big do you want this and do you want to use thread , sport or worsted weight? 
I designed a few baskets yesterday so I am in a creative mood. (not ready to display the baskets yet. I want to wait until I have a whole set to show off!)  Catch me before the creativity dissipates!
ooh, i haven't seen that book! (i rely on the internet so much, i forget about going to the library!) i def. want to use worsted...i'm going for a shape about that's about 4 inches by 4 inches?

i saw a pattern on michaels for paisley appliques that i wanted to try joining together, but i don't think it'll work the way i imagined...

does anyone know where i can find info on crocheting shapes/appliques? any advice?

i'm trying to make things like half circles and shapes like the yin and yang (except seperately?)

just wanted to chime in also...i like crocheting b/c it *is* pretty easy but what i love even more (now that knitting is so popular) is the challange to design more wearable crochet items. i love having the ability to create something new for my wardrobe!! Grin
