21  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Re: Best first lace shawl? on: June 19, 2007 05:39:50 PM
You could do clapotis with lace weight yarnwithout doubling up as well.  You'd just have to do a lot more increase rows to make it the same size, and it wouldn't be as heavy or as thick as the original.  I've done half of one in the same yarn, held single.  It's knitting up nicely, but taking forever (mostly because I haven't worked on it in about 2 years).

For lace shawls, Icarus (from a recent Interweave knits) or Kiri (a free pdf pattern - just google it), are both realtively easy to knit, and use lace weight yarn.  I'm not sure what shape you're looking for, but these are triangles, and a couple of my favourites.

Wow!  I love everything, even though I'm a Ravenclaw, but the names of the yarn made me crack up.  And I'm probably going to copy that shirt, but for Ravenclaw!

I received a zine from honorablemention yesterday - about life's annoyances, called Complaints.  I don't have a picture, but my favorite part is about Hallway Assholes, which I totally agree with.

I love the stuffed Hedwig too - I've been meaning to make myself one for some time now.  The potterpuffs are adorable too - especially Fawkes.  And the dog shirt is so cute!

Hooray!  It came!  And the snood fits - I had to guess at it's size, as I have very little hair. And stuff with fiber it for taking a picture -

(I just had to post this picture, because I find it hilarious - it looks like my brain is trying to escape out the back of my head).

And Customs opened it?  Silly Customs.  Oh well, it's all there!

I just got the best swap package ever in the mail today.  It made it here safe and sound from Australia, despite a misspelling in the address.  Tanza (witch in Herbology training) made me some great stuff!

Firstly, my Raven(s)claw lap quilt (apparently, the house elf she has for embroidering things is an atrocious speller -  Cheesy).  It's about 3 feet by 2 and a half feet - just right for covering up my legs.

Full picture

I don't know if you can see it, but alternating squares are embroidered with quotes from Gilderoy Lockhart and the Weasly Twins, including a couple of my favorites ("Give her hell from us Peeves").  Also, there are Potterpuff characters embroidered on and a bunch of other things (the Dark Mark).  The other squares are from Hogwarts crest fabric, and stars and moons.

Close ups of my favorite patches

and (like the quilt wasn't enough), there is a Ravenclaw Quidditch team shirt for me (Chaser, #17).  It's fantastic.

Flat

Action Shot (which was difficult - as I don't have a full mirror in the house, only a half mirror in the bathroom).

Also, we did a side-swap, where I got some cloth pads, which I neglected to take a picture of (and which are not Ravenclaw themed), which I'm also super excited to try out (but it'll have to wait a month or so).

Thank you so much Tanza!  I love everything!  You're my hero forever!

Oh wow!  That afghan is lovely!  I've got some swap anxiety coming on now.

I got my copy of hers too.  It's super cool - much cooler than mine.  I haven't had a chance to read it through yet (just got home from work), but what I have read is very interesting.
30  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Hogwarts House Swap Round 2 {sign ups from 4/12 - 5/1 sendouts 6/1} on: May 23, 2007 10:30:08 PM
I'm nearly done.  I finished up my large item tonight, and am in the process of finishing up a pair of gloves that are part of a side-swap I'm doing with my partner.  There's a few more things I'm planning on including, but they'll be quick to do.
