1731  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: Gypsy Swap Round 2 Gallery Sendouts 7/31 on: September 11, 2010 05:11:25 PM
Great embroidery on the bag! That's the second time this week I've seen something embroidered with bullion roses and thought "I have so got to learn to do that!"

I think "and then I moved to New Zealand to be an au pair" wins for best all-around excuse. For anything!

A great vest, though, and I'm glad you finally got a chance to model it for us.

Wulf, my parcel has arrived, I have had a trying week so I will try to get it picked up, (I just get a notice and have to go to post office) and get some pictures taken, just wanted to let you know it was here.
That was so SLOW! I thought it should have arrived on Tuesday! Glad to know it made it, though.

how do I manage, every single round, to miss out on the  gallery until it is at least 4 pages...sheesh..

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who does that. You're thinking "Things sure are off to a slow start in the swap gallery" and then realize you haven't been looking at the gallery!

Bookmarks need to somehow be made automatic, so when you bookmark to a thread you automatically get additional bookmarks to any related threads that open from it. Are you listening, nameless corporate administrators?

Clear gesso is a new one for me too. As gesso, by definition, has filler in it, clear gesso is kind of a misnomer. I'm guessing it's a thick glaze. When I have it on hand I sometimes use a theatrical paint product called Rosco CrystalGel . It's about the thickness of peanut butter. You can apply it with a palette knife for texture or just use it as a sealant. Because it's styrene-based rather than vinyl-based like white glue or most acrylics, it's not rubbery when dry and you can sand it. I wonder if clear gesso might be the same thing packaged for a different market. That being said, I've never found an acrylic gesso that I like. They're all essentially just white acrylic paint and are too rubbery to sand smooth.

Zoma, I love your partner-matching chart. Drawing one should be one of the requirements for swap co-ordinators!

1736  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Re: Metallica tank... just add lace! on: September 06, 2010 09:59:50 AM
Brilliant! Your version works much better than the original t-shirt. The image seems a little too small on the t-shirt and looks a bit forlorn, but cut down to make the tank, it fills the space better and looks like it should always have been like that. The lace, of course, is the finishing touch!

Your colouring looks totally authentic. And I don't think it's too strong at all.

I think I actually had the time for 3 smalls... too late now!
Once you got that birth thing out of the way, you find you have too much time on your hands! Grin

It's too bad you're having bad experiences with other swaps. The quality of work varies a lot and it's really hard to tell ahead of time. My first swap, I looked at stuff my partner had done for other swaps and thought "Ewww!" But what she sent me was fabulous. I think all one can do is concentrate on sending your best and not care whether you get anything. Maybe unequal quality is more of a problem in swaps that are for a specific useful thing, like onesies, rather than thematic swaps like ours. But regardless, taking bad photos and not commenting on each others work is unforgivable. Isn't that the real reason we're doing this?

It sounds like you've got the right attitude to it though: annoyed but not bitter!

I think I am officially addicted to soapmaking!  lol
Admitting it to yourself is the first step to recovery. Wink
