WWP Round 34 - Ostara Traditions

Link to our Gallery

The Spring Equinox, when the day and night are the same length, has been observed as a sacred festival for thousands of years. This is the true return of the Sun promised by Imbolc six weeks earlier, the first signs of new life returning to the Earth. As Christianity spread throughout Europe, it kept many of the Pagan symbols of the season, such as eggs, lambs, and decorated breads, and others that weren't officially adopted by the new religion stayed on in folk culture. Both Christianity and modern Paganism have named this festival after the Goddess Estre or Ostara.

Many familiar Easter traditions have their origins in the ancient pre-Christian festival, and Wiccans and modern Pagans have brought new and reconstructed rituals and symbols to our observance of Ostara. In this swap, we're going to craft items for each other that reflect the traditions of Ostara, both ancient and modern. What favourite Easter traditions that you have adapted to Ostara? What new images and ideas would you like to add to your partner's seasonal practice?

This will be a 4 point swap, with each participant creating a package that adds up to the equivalent of 4 points according to these guidelines:

By Points:
Large=3 points
Medium=2 points
Small= 1 point

By Time
-Large = 4 or more hours
-Medium = 2 or more hours
-Small = less than 2 hours

By Size
-Large = A shawl, a shirt, a skirt, a set of jewelry with four to five items, a purse
-Medium = one single necklace or bracelet, a scarf
-Small = Earrings, stickers, wallets, pouches, bookmarks

By Price
-Large = $30 or more
-Medium = $10-$30 dollars
-Small = $10 or less

PM me (Wulf) with this completed questionnaire to join the swap. Remember that good communication, both with your partner and the group, is essential to the success of a swap. So be sure to post regularly to the forum and stay in contact with me and your partner, especially if you're having any sort of trouble during the swap period. When you mail your package, be sure to get a Delivery Confirmation or Tracking number, and PM me and your partner both when you send your package and when you receive your partner's package. It's a good idea to take photographs of your crafts before you mail them (just in case), and please post photos of the crafts you receive.

Oh Pixie, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I just lost a friend a couple of weeks ago too, and even though I thought I was prepared, it was still difficult. Everything does take longer when you're working through the death of someone near to you. Don't worry about it.

1714  FIBER ARTS / Weaving: Completed Projects / Re: Hitchhiker's towel on: February 04, 2012 05:13:12 PM
I'm astounded by this. You can weave terrycloth? I mean, your towel is utterly brilliant on so many levels and I covet it intensely, but it just never occurred to me that with the right kind of loom, you can just weave your own terrycloth! Shocked I'm not sure where I imagined it came from, perhaps it grew on trees or was sprayed out of a nozzle inside some sort of machine or something, but somehow I never expected this.

Now I want to learn to weave just so I can make terrycloth. I don't know why.

Is everything you've done in school utterly brilliant? Because all the class projects you've posted have been A++. I hope we'll get to see lots more before you graduate!

Love the magnifying glass pendant!

I don't know what kind of crafts I was expecting people to do, but I'm still amazed at the range of stuff!

Yes, blessed Imbolc all!

And I'm putting together the Ostara swap, for those who are waiting. I'll post it tomorrow or Saturday.

1717  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: The Most Amazing Wicked Vices Altered Tin swap Gallery on: February 01, 2012 04:51:26 PM
You people are amazing. It goes without saying, I know, but I'm sayin' it anyway. I haven't enjoyed a swap gallery this much in a long time. Each new tin is so unexpected! I'll be very sad when it's all over.

1718  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: Sherlock Holmes Swap Gallery on: February 01, 2012 04:35:53 PM
LOVE the drawing! It's got the feeling of the moors just right.

A reminder to everyone to PM me and your partner when you receive. I might not catch it if you only post it here, and feedback will be delayed.

1719  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: OTIT-WWP Rd 33!! on: January 31, 2012 07:13:43 PM
I received from MamanTattoo yesterday, but didn't get a chance to open the package until today. I love it!!!

According to the note (actually a late Yule card) MamanT sent, the pile of seeds on the left was actually the main item, a set of nut and seed shapes to hang in trees for birds and animals. But they didn't hold together, so she abandoned it and made something else, namely the little horned fellow on the right.

A tiny felted Cernunnos! His antlers tiny twigs, his limbs are poseable, and he holds a torc and a snake. I love the red hair! A wonderful companion to the Pan poppet from the same maker. Wink

Thanks, Andrann! You always amaze me!
