11  Re: Fabric Art Journals Page Swap #5 GALLERY in The Swap Gallery by Wulf on: June 10, 2016 07:18:56 PM
Whew! I realized this evening that I'd once again somehow missed the Gallery entirely, and fourteen pages had piled up on me! So it was a bit exhausting to get through, but what a fabulous avalanche of wonderful pages. I was going to pick favourites, but I just can't - there are too many great ones.

I received from Yofi today. She took my "trees" theme and took it in an interesting direction:

The tree trunk is a very textural ultrasuede, and the copper leaves look like wire but are actually stitched with fine metallic thread. I love the arched frame and the two bees. I wonder if "Beech" was intended as a kind of pun, or am I just seeing that? Either way, it makes me smile!

Thanks for this - it gives me a whole new set of ideas for future pages.

12  Re: Felt Badge Swap (SU May 17 - May 28, SO June 27) in ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED by Wulf on: June 03, 2016 07:36:31 PM
The thing I like about using wool felt is that you can cut very small pieces and it holds together. Acrylic felt tends to disintegrate if you try to cut it very fine.

I've seen great felt badges embellished with beads, sequins and buttons, but often they just have embroidery (simple or elaborate) and felt appliqué. I did this one for a previous badge swap that was almost all done with needle-felting. That's another advantage of using wool felt.

Both my partners have such interesting things on their lists, it'll be hard to choose something. Maybe I can combine two or three each.

Sorry I've dropped off for a few days. The last (and these really are the last) few flags to come in have been wonderful! I especially love the tiny bell on the "listen" flag, and the sheer ribbons with hearts on "Gratitude".

There are still two people who are haven't posted photos of the flags they made for themselves (you know who you are)  Wink but I'm going to go ahead and finish up posting feedback so I can clear the swap off the Active board.

SonjaBoo has had life interfere with Craftster in a big way this month, and hasn't had time to post a photo of the flag she received. Fortunately I took one before I mailed it, so I can help with that:

I wanted to show both a tiny shoot growing out of the concrete and the great tree contained within it. I wish you could hear the tiny, fairy-like tinkling of the beads, stones and charms along the bottom - it'll be quite lovely in a location with just enough air movement.

Thanks everybody for another great Prayer Flag swap!  Let's do it again in the Fall sometime.

14  Re: Shrine Swap Spring 2016 Gallery in The Swap Gallery by Wulf on: May 12, 2016 05:35:51 AM
Wow, these first few shrines couldn't be more different, could they? I love the variety!

I received from StudioANF yesterday, after a bit of a struggle with UPS. American swap partners, please take note: DON'T USE UPS TO SHIP TO CANADA! I know it works well down there, but on this side of the border they're nothing but trouble. In this case, for example, they charged a $30 brokerage fee to collect $2.23 sales tax - which shouldn't have been due anyway, as it was clearly marked as a gift. And they were going to charge it twice but fortunately Nichole had warned me that she'd already paid it. Grrrr!! Angry

Anyhow, after all that I did get a whole box of shrines! I said that I didn't have room for a large shrine, so instead she sent three small ones. Cheesy

The first one is a specimen under a bell jar on a lamp fixture, surrounded by bright green moss and flowers.

But what is it a specimen of, you ask? A rare Steampunk butterfly, of course!

And it's surrounded by these delicate handmade flowers:

The second shrine is another butterfly:

And look at her clever use of a butterfly clip Cheesy to make the stand at the back:

Shrine Number 3 is a little book that opens up to reveal an Altoids tin shrine!

I love the 3-D Tarot card, and the wax seal on the other side. (There's another on the cover of the book.)

But wait, there's more! Grin

The extras included one of her beautiful watercolour paintings...

...this tiny, tiny blue dragon in a bottle, and a handful of skull beads.

I love all these! And I'm so glad I put a little extra effort into the shrine I sent, or I'd be feeling a bit inadequate! Wink

15  Re: Prayer Flag Swap Round 6 Gallery in The Swap Gallery by Wulf on: May 09, 2016 08:27:58 AM
I received my flag from SonjaBoo on Friday, but didn't know about it til last night, as I've been away for the weekend.

You can't really tell from the photo, but the two orange studs holding the butterfly are fuzzy! Cheesy The hanging letters are ingenious, and I love vintage lace of any sort.

Thanks for this!

AIMR, your idea of including a little pack of scraps for doing soluble stabilizer collage is a brilliant one. This could be a swap in itself, couldn't it?

Thanks for sharing the stories about your dad, Smmarrt. I hope your annus horribilis is behind you, and 2016 will continue better. Certainly this prayer flag is a positive way to mark it. Did anyone else notice the fabric behind the world "fortunate"? Cheesy

Elliehookd, there isn't really a pattern to share for prayer flags, as they're pretty much whatever you want to make them. But is are some useful information at the beginning of the swap thread. And you can't find a better source for ideas and tips than this Gallery!

I think we may be done. I'm going to sit down and update the status list this afternoon to make sure. Stay tuned.

I love that the fabulousness just keeps on coming!

My partner SonjaBoo and I are both waiting to receive from each other, but here's the flag I made for myself.

You can't really see from the photo, but the little butterfly in the corner is very glossy and looks like it's just landed on the fabric.

I was intending to do something else, but I got so excited about trying that soluble stabilizer idea, that I had to do it right now. And the W.B.Yeats quote just sort of presented itself and demanded to be used.

17  Re: Yet Another TM Patch Swap R6- Gallery in The Swap Gallery by Wulf on: May 02, 2016 06:17:33 PM
Don't you just love it when someone you've never met sends you exactly the thing you didn't even realize you wanted? It's like they've been talking to your subconscious behind your back or something. Well, that's what my partner, craftADDchick seems to have been up to, anyway.

I'd listed "Earth from space" on my questionnaire, thinking of the rather boring image of the planet against the black of space, but of course from the surface of the Moon it's much more picturesque. And I love the scrappy look of the Moon contrasted with the lavishly-embroidered Earth.

And I love anything with insects, but this mandala of green and blue plant bugs is absolutely perfect in every way. And the photos don't do justice to the embroidery, but it really is exquisite - every stitch is in exactly the right spot. Look how exactly the backing fabric compliments the colours of the insects!

Thanks so much for these - they're exactly the right way to start my collection of patches.

It's been over a year since the last Prayer Flag Swap, so it's time for another round! If you don't know about prayer flags, this article from Cloth Paper Scissors

How to Make Prayer Flags

1. Cut pieces of fabric to 5" x 11". Use materials you already have on hand.
2. Fold the top down on each piece of fabric and stitch in place to create a 3" sleeve, making the flag surface 5" x 8".
3. Paint, stitch, embroider, appliqué, or collage the flags.
4. Add words, journaling, or symbols as desired. You can appliqué letters, add hand stitching, stencil with textile paint, or just write with a permanent marker.
5. Thread the flags onto a string or cord and hang them outdoors so the breeze will catch them and spread your intentions.

To keep this an easy, low-stress swap, you can choose to send to either one or two partners. In addition, each of us is going to make an additional prayer flag for ourselves. So if you have one partner, you're going to make two flags and keep one, and if you have two partners, you're going to make three flags and keep one.

As usual, to sign up for this swap, complete this questionnaire and PM it to Wulf. But first, read this IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

- You must get delivery confirmation if sending within the U.S., or a mailing receipt if sending to or from elsewhere in the world.
- If you must send late, let the organizers and your partner know ASAP.
- Good communication is very important. If you haven't already posted in this thread, please do so as soon as you've signed up, and stay in touch by posting weekly in the swap thread.
- PM both organizer and your partner when you send and when you receive.
- Please post photos of the flags you receive and the flag you made for yourself in the gallery. Remember to take pictures of what you make before you send it, just in case.
