1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Easter / Animal Faces Cascarones 2015 on: April 04, 2015 07:22:32 AM
Last year was the first time I made Cascarones for my granddaughters.  They were a smashing success =) so this year the Easter Cascarones are back!

To make them different from the flower decorated cascarones of last year (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=432884.0, this year I decorated them with little animal faces embellishments.

These are some of the eggs that the Easter Bunny will bring to my family  Wink

Happy Easter Everyone!
2  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Easter / Easter Peep Diorama - PBS Sherlock - on: March 18, 2015 04:27:16 PM
We have a Easter Peep Diorama contest going on in the family.
This is my Peep Diorama: BBC (PBS) Sherlock 221B Baker Street Living room.

Because I am a Sherlock nerd fan, I search and found the wallpaper for both walls of the Living Room. I also included the A-Z London Street Atlas guide from the second episode, The Blind Banker and of course Sherlocks violin.

I like the way the mirrorover the fireplace mantel reflects the famous wallpaper.

The books on the coffee table are, Fingerprints Analysis and Understanding & Crime and Criminology.

Update: Two more sets Wink

Set #2

Soda Pop bottle scarf & hat set for my son that is a fan to unusual soda pop flavors.
4  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Party Planning / Tea Time Birthday Party - Image overload - on: August 18, 2014 12:17:26 PM
Hello Crafty Ladies,
Another birthday party under our belt!
This years birthday party theme for my twin granddaughters 4th birthday was Tea Time.
Cake Table

This is what planned and put together for their party.
First thing, I got the girls birthday outfits and sandals.

I google image search for a teapot & teacup graphic with the same colors of the girls birthday dresses to make the decorations, tags, water bottle & sandwiches  labels and cupcake toppers with the same color palette.

Party Favors:
For the girls:  Hats and matching purses.

Inside the purse each girl got a handkerchief matching the hat and purse color, a pearl necklace and a white fan.

I made the birthday girls hat and purse a little more distinct than the rest by changing the small white daisy to a bigger flower matching their dress colors and a pink tulle ruffle.  Also their while fan is decorate in gold instead of silver.

For the boys: A plastic top hat and a gentleman favor box with a white handkerchief, a bow tie and a mustache.

Ladies Photo Props Hats, pearls necklaces and mustaches for the men to take funny pictures.

Birthday Party Sign It wasnt my best handwriting but because I forgot to buy a second black poster in case of making a mistake, this one had to do.

The Centerpieces

Juice Boxes & Personalized Water Bottles. Sweet Tea & Raspberry Ice Tea
The party venue place encouraged/suggested juice boxes for the kids. To add a little of the theme I made them a teacup embellishment.

I made the Chicken Salad, Cuban Ham Spread and Flower Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches.
My daughter made the Cucumber Sandwiches, Vegetable Tray and Fruit Salad.
Chocolate and Strawberry Pirouline Tray.
Merengues I added pink flowers and green hearts sugar sprinkles to store bought merengues.

Cookie Boxes Favors

5  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Mother's Day / Mothers Day Tussie Mussies on: May 11, 2014 04:57:32 PM
Mother's Day Tussie Mussie

Tussie Mussie is a small flower bouquet, typically given as a gift. The term tussie-mussie comes from the reign of Queen Victoria when the small bouquets became a popular fashion accessory. Typically, tussie-mussies include floral symbolism from the language of flowers.
During the Victorian era, both in the UK and the USA the interest in the language of flowers was very popular. Gifts of blooms, plants, and specific floral arrangements were used to send a coded message to the recipient, allowing the sender to express feelings which could not be spoken aloud in Victorian society. Armed with floral dictionaries, Victorians often exchanged small "talking bouquets," called nosegays or tussie-mussies, which could be worn or carried as a fashion accessory.
Unfortunately, I am extremely allergic to many flowers and plants. I knew that I couldnt make Tussie Mussies in the traditional way of sending a message with flowers. But I liked the idea of a small pretty bouquet and I decided to make them using Geranium Regal Graziosa Lilac from my yard.
To make the bouquet I use plastic disposable wine glasses, without their base obviously and floral foam. They were a perfect fit for the Tussie Mussies.

Happy Mothers Day to all of you Crafty Ladies.
6  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Easter / Cascarones on: April 15, 2014 11:49:33 AM
Cascarones (literally Shells in Spanish) are hollowed-out chicken eggs filled with confetti.

Cascarones are a Mexican Easter tradition. The decorated, confetti-filled cascarones may be thrown or crushed over the recipient's head to shower him or her with confetti. Having a cascarn broken over one's head is said to bring good luck.

I never heard of Cascarones until last year, when my cousin that lives in Houston told me all about this Mexican Easter tradition that is very popular in Texas. This year the girls - my twin granddaughters - are old enough to understand and have fun cracking the Cascarones, so I decided to make it for them.

After a little research, I substituted the confetti with Rice Crispy Cereal (non sugar-coated cereals are ok for birds) because I run out of bird seeds. I have a bird feeder and a hummingbird feeder outside my front windows. I enjoy feeding wild birds and watching them. I wanted to make the Cascarones as safe I could for the birds, avoiding colorful confetti.

To give a little color to the rice crispy, I used a few drops of vegetable food coloring (from my local Natural Food store) in 2 tbsp. of water (vegetable food coloring aren't as bright as conventional food coloring but are non-toxic for birds) To make sure the cereal was completely dry I baked for a very short 2 minutes at 400⁰ F on a baking tray.

Cascarones are usually sealed with tissue paper, but I thought that a crepe paper flower will look prettier. I also made a pretty egg carton cover, because no self-respecting crafter will be able to resist decorating the egg carton. Wink

The girls have lots of fun and we make sure to pick up all the crepe paper scraps and most of the shells from the lawn afterwards.

~How to make Cascarones~

1.  Gently tap the top of an egg.
2. Peel away just a small hole. I use kitchen scissors.
3.  Empty contents of the egg out into a bowl.
4. Thoroughly rinse the egg and shake out excess water.  Let the egg dry.
5.  Dye the eggs.
6.  When the eggs are dry fill with confetti, bird seeds or non-sugar-coated cereal.
7.  Glue the hole in the egg with tissue or crepe paper.

7  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Valentine's Day / Lollipop Bouquet & Hersheys Kisses Flowers on: February 13, 2014 09:38:39 AM
My three years old twin granddaughters are attending pre-school three days/ week. I wanted to make something easy and pretty for the girls to take to their teachers on Valentines Day. The answer came to me in a Google Images search, a lollipop bouquet.

Lollipop Flower Bouquet
The Lollipop flower is very easy and fast to assemble. I used 3 mini pink petals cupcake liners, a lollipop, and green cardstock for the leaf. To assemble, I folded 2 of the cupcake liners in half and put them on the lollipop. I opened up the 3rd liner fully and slip it on to look like a full bloom flower, then added the personalized cardstock leaf last.

For my family, I made Hersheys Kisses Flowers.

I used textured cardstock paper for the flowers and leaves, unfortunately doesnt show well on the pictures. Because the Valentines Hersheys Kisses comes in 3 different colors, I made 3 different color flowers, one to match each Hersheys kiss. I add a personalized tag and pack them in a Valentines themed bag. This flower idea comes from my elementary school days.

Happy Valentine's Day!
8  Halloween / Halloween Decor and Parties / Little Witches Brooms on: October 26, 2013 07:07:47 AM
Black Tulle Brooms

My three years old granddaughters are going to be twin witches for Halloween.

But no respectable witch will be out on Halloween night without her broom Wink
So I made them witches brooms out of black tulle, light enough for them to carry them.

9  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / Wedding Photo Props on: September 11, 2013 10:27:27 AM
After the big success of the Alice in Wonderland Photo Props I made for my niece's bridal shower, I was inspired to make these Wedding Photo Props for her wedding.

10  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Party Planning / Ladybug Themed Birthday Party (lots & lots of pic) on: August 26, 2013 07:21:08 AM
Hello Crafty Ladies,
Another birthday has gone by for my twin granddaughters. This years party theme was Ladybugs.

I cant believe they are 3 years old already!

You can say I went a little overboard with the theme Smiley even the cupcake liners were ladybug themed, but it was so much fun to plan and create all the ladybug birthday crafts.

The Crafts:
The party was at the party area of a children park and zoo. I planned for all the crafts to be disposable. I didnt want to worry about taking care of centerpieces, ornaments and picking them after the party to take them back home (the plan was a failure, no one wanted to throw away the crafts, and people ended taking them home). I make everything out of cardstock, foam sheets, paper doilies, foam board, felt sheets and gift wrapping paper from The Dollar Tree store and ribbons from Wal-Mart.
I took ladybug graphics from the web and created the birthday party tags, Photo Prop Sign and cupcake toppers in my Photoshop program.
Centerpieces Made out of carbox, wrapped in ladybug gift wrap paper. Green grass made out of a green hula skirt from the Dollar Tree store (cut in 6 pieces for 6 centerpieces).

Flowers made out of foam sheets (I use a metal cookie cutter). The stems were bamboo skewers dyed green with food coloring (I try to do crafts using what I have at home as much as I can).
Red cardstock rosettes with big paper doilies and bow ribbon, small paper dollies with a number 3 graphic on white painted bamboo skewers.

Photo Props Red felt masks with black felt dots and black pipe cleaners antennae, lips, mustaches, signs, hats and a bug net. Great fun! People got really funny pictures with mustaches, masks and hats props.

Ladybug Picture Frame Prop A big hit! Everyone got a really cute picture with the Ladybug picture frame.

Crafty CubanMother here  Cheesy

Instead of Party Hats, I made Ladybugs antennae headbands (plastic black headbands from eBay), black pipe cleaners and red craft pom poms) with a cute Get your Bug On tag in a Ladybug Plush Basket.

Favors Inflatable ladybug balls (from Oriental Trading Co.) and Bug Kits from the Dollar Tree.

Candy dishes (Red hot candy and black and red licorice) Red plastic candy dishes with 3D ladybug stickers.

Little Ladybug Spin Wheels From Hubs Five & Ten (dollar plus store) on a black wood oval base.

Mini Ladybug Doll (6 inches tall) with a Happy 3rd Birthday Sign. I couldnt let it pass when I saw her at the Thrift Store for .25 ȼ

Cake Table - The girls party hats are from Oriental Trading Co. (I got them on sale; it was worth buying them than making it myself).

Ladybug Fans Black and Red Cardstock and googly eyes wit Stay Cool tags.

Party Sign Black foam board, red cardstock, googly eyes and a piece of white baseboard for the stake.

Bug Net Photo Prop from the Dollar Tree decorated with butterflies and a red bow. The kids really liked the bug net and pretending play catching butterflies.

The Ladybug string piata was from Party City. The string piata is a Cuban tradition; there is no blindfold or hitting stick ever.  All the kids pull the stings at the same time, after the count of 1, 2, 3, causing the trapdoor to open and all of the candy to fall on the floor.

Planning for next year birthday party already stared  Wink
