101  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Bright Colored Afghan on: November 05, 2011 09:24:23 AM
This the biggest crochet project that I've ever done, so I'm rather proud of it.  I made it for my friend's little boy, who will be a year and a half or so at Christmas.  Some granny's daughters came from the Granny's Daughters 2 swap and the rainbow GD's were the inspiration for this afghan.

I started it back in June, but worked on it very inconsistently since then.  With Christmas coming up, I got my rear in gear and finished it up this past week.  It's super soft now that it's been washed (I was concerned about that, actually) and I hope he likes it!

Comments and critique are welcome!
102  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Pattern Seam Allowance question on: October 29, 2011 11:11:56 AM
So I'm finally delving into the world of patterns for something where size matters ... and I have a question.  When they say 'transfer pattern to fabric and cut out' and then 'use 1/2 inch seam allowance' do they mean that where I cut should be a half inch from the line I've traced or do I cut along the line and then sew a half inch from the cut? So will I be sewing on the line or a half inward from the line?

Thanks everyone!  I cut out one part of it and then decided to pause, just in case I was doing it wrong!
103  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Tomato Vegetable Lentil Soup (can be vegan/vegetarian!) on: October 21, 2011 12:15:24 PM

One of my all-time favorite soups is based on the Tomato Vegetable Lentil recipe from a cookbook called Soup Makes the Meal.  Over the years, I've changed it so it's more my own - adding some things, leaving others out.  I make it almost every week to take for lunch.  You'd think I'd get sick of it by now, but I haven't!

Here is my version of Tomato Vegetable Lentil soup!

Ingredients:

10 cups of chicken broth (use vegetable to make this vegetarian/vegan!)
1 T olive oil
2 large carrots, peeled and diced
2 celery stalks, diced
1 onion, chopped
1-2 potatoes (depending on size), peeled and chopped
1 cup lentils
1 can of diced tomatoes (low sodium if you can)
1/2 cup of rice (uncooked)
1 bay leaf
1/2 t. dried thyme
1/2 t. basil
1/4 t. red pepper flakes (or less - adjust to your taste)
1/4 t. black pepper

1. Chop carrots, onions and celery.

2. Put olive oil into stock pot along with chopped veggies.  Add all herbs now, too.  (I do it early so I don't forget!)  Saute until onions are tender.

3. Add chicken (or vegetable) broth and bring to boil.

4. Add lentils and rice.  Simmer 10-15 minutes.

5. Dice potatoes and add to pot.  Simmer 15 minutes.

6. Add can of tomatoes (with juice if you like a tang to your soups!) and simmer an additional 10 minutes.

7.  Taste and adjust seasonings.

This makes at least 10 one-cup servings, but I usually portion mine directly into tupperware to take to work throughout the week!  It tastes even better after reheating!  Oh and serving it with a crusty bread is so yum!

I hope you enjoy!

Welcome to the Ongoing Holiday Gift List Swap! Round 2

This is the place to help your fellow Craftster narrow down their holiday gift lists.  This swap welcomes every winter holiday including Christmas, Hanukah/Chanukah, Kwanza, Winter Solstice, etc.  If you want a handmade holiday for your friends and family, this is the place to get help on your list.  From grandma to your own kids, your lists can include almost anyone in your life that you might need a little help crafting for.   Please read through this initial post carefully before joining and PM me with any questions.

How it works:

This swap will work in an ongoing format.  The first person in the swap will post a list of handmade items that they would like.  The participants then look through the list and if they can fulfill that particular wish, they claim that person for that item and post their own list for the next person to claim them.  This works like a chain.  Person A is claimed by Person B, Person B is claimed by Person C, etc.  You must claim to be claimed and only one person can claim another at a time.  Each participant gets two claims at a time.  Once one of your claims is received and the organizer is notified, you may claim again.  This may change as the swap goes on.

What is on the list:

Each participant can post as many size medium requests as they would like in their list.  Please try to post a minimum of 10 items you would like so there is a variety and a better chance of not stalling the swap.  You may post larges or smalls as well, but please realize that to fulfill the swap requirements, you are only required to claim and send a medium.  Extras are always good.  This swap will be for handmade items only.  Organizing your list by crafting medium is a good idea to help other participants find something on your list that they are good at, but is not required.  Please note that because these are holiday wishes we are filling that items should be your absolute best quality.

How to make your list:

Please format your list to have an introduction that lets us know a little more about you such as your name, your general location.  Please format your wishes so that each participant has a clear idea as to what you are looking for.  Posting links is highly advisable.  It is also a great idea to provide participants with as much relevant information on the gift recipient as possible.  Here is my suggested way for formatting each wish:

<item> <recipient> <preferences> <link>
<allergies>

Example:
Doll dress for my daughter.  She prefers pink floral fabric with a velcro or button closure.  Here is one she likes http://URL GOES HERE
Allergies:  Smoke

Including allergies right underneath of each wish keeps the allergies in focus.  This is such an important part to consider when claiming someone.  If you format your wishes like this, they will be clear and you are more likely to be claimed quickly.

Making a claim:

Once you make a claim, you must PM the participant that you are claiming for their address and to discuss the item you have claimed to make for them.  Once you make a claim, you are committed to making that item.  Remember, you only have two weeks to complete the item and ship it.  If you choose to send extras, they do not contribute to the size of the claim.  A medium is technically either between 2-3 hours in time, or $20-$30 in supplies/value.  To claim the person who is currently available, respond to their post with I claim <username> for <item claimed for>.  For example, if I were to claim myself to make socks, I would write, I claim kaz814 for a hoopla.  Within that same response, you then post your own list so someone can claim you.

You are allowed to make and have up to THREE outstanding claims.  Should you become a late sender, this can and will change on a case by case basis as determined by the organizers.

Send Outs:

Just like other ongoing swaps, you will have two weeks from the date of your claim to send out your item.  There are no exceptions.  DC#s will be absolutely required.  If you do not provide a DC#, it will be noted in your feedback.  If you do not provide a DC# and your package gets lost, you will be required to resend.  You must PM the organizers with the DC#/customs# when you send!

Qualifications to Join:

Anyone is free to join under standard Craftster Swap Guidelines.  Due to the time constraints on claims, I reserve the right to deny any Craftster that has a history of lateness.

Receiving packages:

Please PM me as soon as you receive each package.  This is so I can keep track of claims.  Pictures in the gallery are also appreciated.  Some of your fulfilled wishes might inspire other wishes for other participants.

Other important info:

You do not have to message me when you claim a person.  You only have to message them for their address.  Please PM me however when you send your questionnaire, when you send your claim, and when you receive a claim.  Please PM me with any questions you have.

Please do not claim a person until you have been approved for this swap and it is listed in your profile!  Please do not claim a person once one of your claims have been received until the person receiving from you verifies your package arrived and is exactly what you claimed them for.

Sometimes a person will stall the swap.  When your list has been up for more than 18-24 hours without someone claiming you, please try to add more items to your list so you have a better chance of being claimed.  Remember that it is possible that not all of your items will be claimed.

There will be a discussion/gallery thread in the Gallery area.  This is an area to give us updates and discuss this swap.

At the end of the month, whoever is the last on the list will be first on the list for the following month.  You will have to sign up for each additional round that you choose to participate in.  You must be current in the previous round to be accepted to the new round.

This swap is open to international swappers as well as new swappers.

I reserve the right to deny participation to anyone who is late in previous rounds of this swap.  This is a holiday swap and should be fun!

If you want to participate, here is the information to send to the organizer.  Please have the title of your PM be the name of the swap.

Details of swap:

Details of swap:

This swap is all about living (and crafting!) frugally.  Frugal living means something different to each person, but it may include saving money by using cloth napkins, knit/crocheted dishcloths, reusable shopping bags (you save 5 cents for each bag you bring in at my grocery store!), wool dryer balls (seriously, the dryer sheets can be pricey!), reusable menstrual pads or diva cup/moon cup bag and wet bags, soap savers, homemade laundry soap, homemade bath soaks, etc.  Or it may include recipes to try out instead of eating out, a piggy bank/other way of corralling change to take to the bank instead of letting it be eaten by the couch, having a coupon organizer ... the ideas are endless!

This round will be a bit different as we're including holiday themed items in this round!  If you don't want to receive holiday items, no worries - just say so on the questionnaire!  If you do, great!  Any and all winter holidays are accepted!

For this swap, 95% of what you'll use to craft should be from your stash.  The more you use that you already have, the better!  If you absolutely must purchase something, it'd be great if you could get it at the Salvation Army/Goodwill/thrift stores or on sale.  (I don't want to say don't buy anything because I know how it feels to have everything you need except one little thing for a project.)

Crafting Requirements:

The requirements for this swap is 5 points, which will translate to one medium and three smalls OR two  mediums and one small.  If you want to do more, please talk to your partner!  Remember, this is all about frugality so do not feel obligated or pressured into sending more than the requirements.  If your partner mentions spoiling and you can't or won't, be honest!  We're all here to get a handle on saving and becoming more financially in charge of our futures, so no one is going to look down their nose at you if you don't want to or can't send more than the requirements.  Really.  Pinky promise!

For those who need a refresher, here's the Craftster guide to what constitutes each size:

By Time

-Medium = 2 or more hours
-Small = 2 or less hours

By Size
-Medium = one single necklace or bracelet, a scarf
-Small = Earrings, stickers, wallets, pouches, bookmarks

By Price (though really, USE YOUR STASH!!!  The entire package should be less than a small!)
-Medium = $10-$30 dollars
-Small = $10 or less

Communication Requirements:

Checking in on the swap thread at least once a week is required so we know you're still around and crafting!  A quick note saying that you're still working is sufficient.  Since in the last swaps we were a very chatty bunch - and not always on topic - I am requiring that every post have SOMETHING to do with being frugal, being crafty or being craftily frugal.  Also, communicating with your partner is also a necessity.  If you have consistent (and recent) dings on feedback for poor communication or sending late, I may not approve your application.  I will also note communication in feedback!

If you want to participate, PM the following information to the organizer (kaz814) and co-org (puzzler):

Please fill out the questionnaire thoroughly!  If you're unsure of what you'd like to receive, check out the list below (it's a few posts down!)  It's hard to pair partners when I don't know what sorts of things you'd like to receive or what crafts you do!  Thank you so much!!!!

110  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Lunch Bag on: September 05, 2011 08:25:09 PM
In the Ongoing Holiday List Swap (come play - it's awesome!), I made a lunchbag for craftaddiction's mom.  I'd been hoarding the fabric (which I got from a swap!) for ages and I'm so tickled I finally found something worthy!  I used stiff interfacing as well as batting to make it able to stand on its own and keep things cool/warm, as her mom wishes.

The color's a bit off in this picture (ah camera phone, you're better than my camera but ...), but the outer fabric is dark brown with tan swirls and tan cotton ribbon handles:

And the inside (you can see that it closes with a bit of velcro).  The colors are more true to life in this picture:

It was a lot of fun to make!
