3151  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Frugal Living 3: HaveYourselfAFrugalLittleHoliday SU CLOSED, Send by Nov. 12 on: September 07, 2010 08:31:40 AM
GALLERY!

Have yourself a frugal little holiday,
Let your debts be light
From now on,
our savings will be out of sight.

Have yourself a frugal little holiday,
Make the Yule-tide cheap,
From now on,
credit cards won't make us weep.

Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Money saved which is in our banks
Gathers interest once more.

Through the years
We all will be much richer,
If our choices allow,
Hang a frugal craft upon the highest bough.
And have yourself a frugal little holiday now.

(Shamelessly based upon Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, sung by Judy Garland)

Details of swap:

This swap is all about living (and crafting!) frugally.  Frugal living means something different to each person, but it may include saving money by using cloth napkins, knit/crocheted dishcloths, reusable shopping bags (you save 5 cents for each bag you bring in at my grocery store!), wool dryer balls (seriously, the dryer sheets can be pricey!), reusable menstrual pads or diva cup/moon cup bag and wet bags, soap savers, homemade laundry soap, homemade bath soaks, etc.  Or it may include recipes to try out instead of eating out, a piggy bank/other way of corralling change to take to the bank instead of letting it be eaten by the couch, having a coupon organizer ... the ideas are endless!

This round will be a bit different as we're including holiday themed items in this round!  If you don't want to receive holiday items, no worries - just say so on the questionnaire!

For this swap, 95% of what you'll use to craft should be from your stash.  The more you use that you already have, the better!  If you absolutely must purchase something, it'd be great if you could get it at the Salvation Army/Goodwill/thrift stores or on sale.  (I don't want to say don't buy anything because I know how it feels to have everything you need except one little thing for a project.)

Crafting Requirements:

The requirements for this swap is 5 points, which will translate to one medium and three smalls OR two  mediums and one small.  If you want to do more, please talk to your partner!  Remember, this is all about frugality so do not feel obligated or pressured into sending more than the requirements.  If your partner mentions spoiling and you can't or won't, be honest!  We're all here to get a handle on saving and becoming more financially in charge of our futures, so no one is going to look down their nose at you if you don't want to or can't send more than the requirements.  Really.  Pinky promise!

For those who need a refresher, here's the Craftster guide to what constitutes each size:

By Time

-Medium = 2 or more hours
-Small = 2 or less hours

By Size
-Medium = one single necklace or bracelet, a scarf
-Small = Earrings, stickers, wallets, pouches, bookmarks

By Price (though really, USE YOUR STASH!!!  The entire package should be less than a small!)
-Medium = $10-$30 dollars
-Small = $10 or less

Communication Requirements:

Checking in on the swap thread at least once a week is required so we know you're still around and crafting!  A quick note saying that you're still working is sufficient.  Since in the last swaps we were a very chatty bunch - and not always on topic - I am requiring that every post have SOMETHING to do with being frugal, being crafty or being craftily frugal.  Also, communicating with your partner is also a necessity.  If you have consistent (and recent) dings on feedback for poor communication or sending late, I may not approve your application.  I will also note communication in feedback!

If you want to participate, PM the following information to the organizer (kaz814):

Please fill out the questionnaire thoroughly!  If you're unsure of what you'd like to receive, check out the list below (it's a few posts down!)  It's hard to pair partners when I don't know what sorts of things you'd like to receive or what crafts you do!  Thank you so much!!!!

Is everyone still up for this?  I was thinking of opening sign-ups this week or next. Smiley

Time frame:

Signups: whatever day I get it up to Sept. 30
Crafting time: 6 weeks
Send by: November 12

The past two rounds have been 5 points (medium, three smalls or two mediums and one small).  Would this still work?  Is 4 points preferable?  Thoughts?

Ooh, this is a fun idea!
3154  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / Re: Film Reels and Boxes on: September 06, 2010 01:45:08 PM
I was thinking a shadowbox type of deal.  These could be the focal point or do you have any old family pictures that would be appropriate as the centerpiece with a few of the reels and boxes with it?

I'm trying to do a mostly handmade Christmas.  I did it last year and I think it went over well!  Smiley
3157  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Re: 2010 What is everyone planning to make for Christmas? on: September 05, 2010 07:09:02 AM
I have everyone figured out apart from SIL. She loves to watch films, read books, loves chocolate, Westies, and wears mostly black. I sew. Any ideas? I thought of doing a handbag like the Japanese knot bag, but I'm not sure she'd like a bag.

What about a 'winter weekend' basket?  You can include a DVD or a giftcard to Amazon (which would work for a book too!), some homemade hot cocoa mix, a mug wrap (perhaps with a Westie on it?), some chocolate (either homemade candy or storebought), and maybe a lap blanket so she can snuggle in?  Or if that's too much, a lap blanket with a book or something on it?

what is givers and needers???

Laura, Givers n Needers is when people who have an overabundance of crafting supplies send a box o'craft goodies to someone in need of the supplies, and in return, that someone makes something small for them in thanks.

I was a needer last time and I think I could be a giver this time. Smiley  I will have to check my various stashes to see what I have!
