21  RRR Craftalong in REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING by kaz814 on: October 15, 2013 02:37:18 PM

There has been some discussion on the FOC board (thanks, bookstorebabe and Onyxnox) about starting up a Reusing/Recycling/Recrafting craftalong, so here it is!

The idea is that each month, we'll have a reused/repurposed/recycled item that we'll use in our crafting or we'll have a theme around which you can recycle anything your heart desires!  Crafts can be posted in this thread and on the board they'd usually go under so everyone can share in the recrafting goodness!

So who's in?

These past three months have been full of amazing projects here on the PBW boards.  It was hard to choose only a few to feature, but here they are.  They were chosen by your votes in the 'This Rocks' button and by my own personal preference.  They are in no particular order!

This swap will be for one holiday-themed ATC ornament.  An ATC is a 2.5" x 3.5" (64mm x 89mm) piece of art.  Each crafter will provide his or her partners with five themes from which they can draw inspiration for these ATCs.  In the past, this has included color schemes, special holiday memories, favorite winter animals, or favorite holiday experiences.

All holidays are welcome in this swap!  Winter-themed ATCs are great for wreaths, packages, cards and other decorations.  Since these ATCs may be used as ornaments, please add a way to hang the ATC, as well.

Each crafter will be assigned to a small group of 3-4, depending on the total number of participants.  If a crafter would like to part of more than one group, please indicate so on the questionnaire.  New swappers may only participate in one group.  You will be required to send one ATC to each member of your group.  Members of the group may include those in other countries.  If you sign up for this swap, you are agreeing to potentially sending internationally.  Please take pictures before sending your ATC.

Send-outs are by November 16, 2013, which should be in time for most major winter holidays!  After sending and receiving, please PM kaz814 with ATC SWAP: SENT or ATC SWAP: RECEIVED.  Since USPS tracking is unavailable for envelopes, should an envelope lose its way, you will be required to resend.

Please post pictures of the ATCs you've received in the Gallery so we can all admire everyone's art!  If you are unable to do so, please indicate it on your questionnaire and tell your partners so they can make sure to take and post pictures of the ornaments they send to you.

If you want to participate, information to send to organizer:

Please list (at least) five themes you would like your partners to use for inspiration:

If yes, how many?
What winter holidays do you celebrate?
Are there colors/textures/themes you absolutely do not want?

Also, remember to read the Swap Info Guide to find other rules about participating in a swap.

24  Featured Member - liliv-1 in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by kaz814 on: August 18, 2013 04:19:55 PM
We have a new Featured Member in the Purses, Bags, and Wallets board!
Congratulations, liliv-1!!!

liliv-1 has only been a member of Craftster for six months or so, but she's been a very active member on the PBW board.  She has posted gorgeous bags, participated in the Purses Craftalong and is supportive of other PBW bag makers, too!  So we decided to ask her a few questions and figure out her awesome bag-making secrets!

Why (and when) did you begin making purses, bags, and wallets?

I started sewing bags and purses in a more serious way last summer,  until then I had made only very few totes. But last summer I saw on etsy a couple of really enviable purses and  I wanted to make something similar on my own. I researched on the web about bag making and found many useful tips and tutorials. At this point I want to thank the Craftster community because it was my the biggest information source! It proved that bag making is a big addiction to me! Smiley

How long have you been sewing?
I grew up seeing my mother sewing all our fancy clothes, so sewing was always something very familiar to me. I used to help her many times, but she never allowed me to use the sewing machine: she was afraid! When I  graduated from high school my mother purchased a sewing machine for me as a present and I've been sewing my own clothing since then!

What type of sewing machine do you have?
I still have the singer model my mum bought for me when I was 18 years old. I also have a diamantino model I bought  8 years ago, which proved to be a very reliable model.

Do you have any tips for anyone looking to make their first purse, bag, or wallet?
Three word: Insist, research, experiment!

What other crafts do you enjoy?
Sewing is the only craft that I enjoy!!! I would like to learn other crafts like knitting or crocherting, but this would mean reduce my sewing time and I don't want this to happen! Smiley

What's your favorite aspect of Craftster?
I like the vast variety of this community! You can find anybody: a beginner, an expert etc and many different crafts as well. I also like that it is a huuuuge source of information!

What is your favorite PBW project on Craftster that you have posted?

A big denim purse which I made for a sewalong here on crafster

What is your favorite PBW project on Craftster that someone else has posted?

I love very much all hax's purses. My favorite is the one with the the metal eyelet handle she posted.

I also liked very much this yummy lunch bag with the lovely drawstring
 from Midnight Sun

Congratulations, liliv-1!  We can't wait to see more of your fabulous bags!

25  Small Produce Bag in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by kaz814 on: August 09, 2013 12:46:35 PM
Well, when I started this, I thought I had more yarn than I did.  I probably could have put another inch on it, but I wasn't sure how quickly it would run out, so I finished it off.  I'll probably be using this when I go to the farmer's market or grocery store.   It's probably 10 inches long by 7 or so inches high, before it gets stretched out.

I got the pattern from here and it was really easy - mostly double crochet with a bit of single at the top and bottom.  And had I kept at it, it would have been done months ago.  Ah well.

Comments and critique appreciated!

27  Craftster's 10th Anniversary Cross-Category Challenge! Purses Winner Announced! in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Discussion and Questions by kaz814 on: June 25, 2013 09:19:34 AM
Craftster's 10th Anniversary Cross-Category Challenge

Craftster is turning 10!! That's right, August marks 10 years of running with scissors all over the internet! In honor of this momentous time, we're hosting a cross-category challenge! Every category will have the same challenge with the same entry times. The 10 category winners with the most votes will be put head-to-head-to-head-to... you get it.... for a GRAND PRIZE PACKAGE!!!

The theme for this challenge is "What Craftster means to me." Now, don't be scared of this theme! Craftster is made by YOU, Craftster can mean different things to different people so whatever it means to you, that's great!! Still unsure it's as easy as I say? Here's some examples that are just the tip of the iceberg!

  • "To me, Craftster means trying new things! Here's a project featuring a technique I've never tried before!"
  • "To me, Craftster means tutorials! Here's a project I made from a tutorial I found on the boards."
  • "To me, Craftster means swapping! Here's a project I'm sending in a swap."
  • "To me, Craftster means a community where I can show off my geekiness! Here's a project that relates to this thing I'm interested in!"

See? Not so bad, eh? Seriously, as long as you can describe why you feel your project reflects something Craftster represents to you, then you're good!

Rules and Suggestions:
  • You may enter in as many categories as you like, but you may only enter a project once. So if you wanted to enter in three categories, you would need to have made three projects!
  • Your project must have been made between June 24th and the time of posting. Your entry should not have been posted on Craftster previously (ie not something you made and posted years ago!)
  • If using a pattern or tutorial, please let us know.
  • You can begin crafting at any time but remember to post your thread in this board from August 7th through August 13th at 11:59:59 PDT. Voting for each category will be open August 14th to August 21st.
  • Although there will be 20 category winners, only the 10 winners with the most votes will go on to a grand prize round! Voting for this will be August 23rd to August 30th, with the grand prize winner being formally announced September 3rd!

The winner in each category will receive a Craftster pin, and a Craftster USB card.

30  Family tree "scrapbook" page in Scrapbooking: Completed Projects by kaz814 on: March 17, 2013 11:49:03 AM
Well, I didn't use this as a scrapbook page, but it's the first thing that I've HAD to make in ages because I got bit by the crafting bug.  Any suggestions would be welcome! Also, sorry for the crappy picture.  I need a camera and not my phone. Sad

The background is a neutral tannish brown with tone-on-tone stamping of leaves.  The word tree I made at tagxedo.com and printed on cardstock.  I cut it out and then cut out the dark teal "frame" to match.  The red words say "Love is the master key that opens the gates of happiness" and I stamped it on cardstock and then made a frame for that, too.  The picture is one my grandfather gave me at Christmas - it's been well-loved, obviously, but I thought it was even cooler that way, honestly.  I added the heart for a pop of red, which is also why I added the ribbon.  The real/turquoise theme matches my craft area, so it's being displayed there.

Concrit welcome!
