4  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Discussion and Questions / Eyelet newbie on: September 22, 2009 07:42:17 PM
I am really scared to try and fasten eyelets for some reason.  How exactly does it work?  I have a setter but it just doesn't spatially fit together in my head.

5  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Discussion and Questions / What is your favorite technique for Alcohol Inks? on: September 22, 2009 07:40:54 PM
I am considering buying some alcohol inks, but my logical self says... wait... no... expensive... do you really need it?

Instead of caving in to my impulsive self I thought I would try and find some info on them from people who craft with them.

What do you use them on?  How do you apply them?  Is it worth the cost?

Thanks!
6  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Discussion and Questions / Re: Any Cricut owners out there? on: September 22, 2009 07:34:12 PM
I own a Cricut Expression (the 12 x 12 model) and I love it.

I too am drawn to bargains and deals and always settling for the cheapest of the choices.  I am so glad I didn't in this instance.

the 12 x 12 allows you to make your own cards  AND envelopes.  You can also buy a 12 x 24 mat and use it to cut out lengthy phrases or borders (great for teachers and homeschoolers) and also vinyl for home decor.  You can use it to cut out stencils on freezer paper (which I love doing)

You can always cut smaller with the expression but you can't cut bigger than 6 x 12 with the personal cutter.

If you buy a lot of embellishments or lettering for you crafts do the math and average out what you have spent in a year/6 months and what you will save in the future.

The Cartridges are expensive but I have found a couple on Ebay that are reasonable...stay away from the large craft stores for them... jo-anns sells one I just bought for 60bucks  (I bought it for 24.89 on ebay).  The coupons are deceiving ...in fine print at the bottom it usually excludes cricut products.  There are deals on the carts you just have to dig.  Sure Cuts A Lot software is like digital die-cutting heaven for me.  Any true type font you have on your pc (and there are thousands to download out there) it will cut.. so this eliminates the need to buy cartridges just for alphabets...it will also cut out any SVG file that you load into the software... again, there are tons out there for free and for reasonable cost compared to the carts.  I am pretty frugal and I cannot believe I hadn't invested in one before now.. I would have saved hundreds of dollars, easily.

Happy Shopping!

I love my Cricut Expression!

There is a difference between the two.

The Expression can cut on a 12 x 12  and 12 x 24 mat.

The personal cutter is a 6 x 12 mat but is way more portable than the expression.

I have Sure Cuts A Lot software on my PC to hook up to my Expression and I think it is limitless with the images and fonts that are available and that you can create.  I have a couple of cartridges as well because I am a newbie and didn't know about SCAL before I invested in several carts.  The only complaints I have are:

The carts are so expensive.
The cutting mat looses stickiness too fast but there ARE ALTERNATIVE ways to re-stickying your mat.
It is addictive.
It is so addictive.
The little paper scraps on the floor are driving my husband crazy.

I have a Cricut Expression which uses cartridges but also has the ability to connect to your computer. There is a program called Sure Cuts A Lot that allows you to cut with your Cricut any font or SVG file that you download or create. So, the possiblities are endless. There are lots of free files online and lots that are very reasonably priced. The size of the Cricut Expression is very nice also, it cuts up to 12x24. There is also a deep cut blade that will cut chipboard, magnetic sheeting, foam, felt, etc.
The cheapest price I've found for the expression is at AC Moore or Walmart. The cheapest price for Sure Cuts A Lot (SCAL) is $59.99 at http://store.candacraft.com/Page-Store_1.aspx. I hope that helps!

I love my Cricut Expression!  I just got it this week and have been a cutting fool.  SCAL is the serious Monkey-Jam.  The possibilities are endless with it and there are TONS of free files floating around to download for free cuts.  You can also cut ANT true type font you have on your PC rather than buying an alphabet cartridge/s for the cricut.  The expression also cuts vinyl for wall decor, stenciling, etc... I read that it can cut thin fabric too for making appliques.  I <3 my cricut.  My husband thinks it is cool too.

Sometimes local scrapbook stores have open crops and you can use their cutters.  Just a thought.
