1  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: October 2010 Birthday Discussion and Gallery! on: November 15, 2010 09:08:49 PM
I got claimed by Cinnamon Teal and she made me a hugely long and glorious scarf!  I'm wrapped up in it right now--it's like ginormous and snuggly and so many colors that I can wear it with a ton of outfits.  I actually had wisted one similar to it.  Thank you thank you!!!  It's so perfect!!!   And she spoiled me with some awesome Bon Appetit magazines so I can get my gourmet on (I'm trying to learn to cook and there are some incredible recipes in them!!)

Pics! (just 2 because my camera is perpetually low on battery lately  Huh)

You can't tell, but the scarf is folded to 1/4 of its length...it's super long!
And the lovely stripes

Have you seen the movie "Bright Star"?  There's a fantastic scene where they have a butterfly farm in her room and I thought of you when I saw the jars.  Here's a link to a youtube video of it  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LW6AkaO-LQM

I got my INCREDIBLE package from PurpleLime yesterday--couldn't post pics til today, but I am sooo thrilled with the package :-D

She claimed me for a tea wallet, but when i opened my package I found not one, not two, but THREE perfectly cute tea wallets in my absolute favorite colors.  Plus, awesome handmade gift bags from magazine pages (which are so cool I would have been happy with just those!) and a Dr. Seuss card and envelope that she also made.  To top it all off, she included **5** different kinds of delicious teas and some gorgeous brocade fabrics for a quilt I'm making.  THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU PURPLE LIME!!!!!

On to the pics!

The whole package (I only showed 1 of the lovely bags)

The cute tea wallets!

Action shot!

If she's willing to go a little more vintage/rustic, you could get some of those oversized mason jars with the screw on rings and just use circles of tulle underneath, so they're held on by the rings.  That way, it's simple, not bulky and functional.  I'm concerned that crocheted wire might hurt the butterflies if their wings get caught.  Or use tulle over the hurricane jars and a ribbon around it to hold it on.

7  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: October 2010 Birthday Swap Lists Only - Open all Month! on: October 23, 2010 01:09:13 PM
Hi there!  I'm Sarah from the clean, green state of Oregon.  I turned 24 on October 22nd.  Hmmm, about me....well, I love autumn and anything that is pumpkin/cinnamon/spicy fall flavored.  Oooooh, and anything snuggly and soft.   I sing, play guitar, mess around on various other instruments and write songs.  I knit, sew, paint, throw pottery and scrapbook (for special occasions only, like brag books), among other things.  I'm getting into housewares and sometimes refinish or reupholster old furniture.  I dig old, worn vintage things, peeling paint, antique-looking anything.  I LOVE color, just not really pink, though my favorites are green, purple and yellow.  I'm expanding my cooking skills.  My personal style is kind of bohemian-nerd rock-thriftstore chic, I guess.  I adore travelinglived in Paris for a short time (I miss it a ton), got my tattoos in Dublin (I'm Irish) and spent time in WalesI totally get the itch to just pick up and go.

Some serious things: I care deeply about fighting the sex trade and human traffickingmy church is starting to plan safe houses for girls recovering from sex slavery and I'm involved in that.  I also lead the youth ministry in my church, which makes me totally love my life :-D I can't say how much I enjoy working with teenagers.  I'm going back to school next term to eventually get my Master's in social work to do counseling and art therapy.

IdeasI'm just going to throw a bunch out there and highlighted some that would be especially grand, but I am so stoked at the prospect of ANYTHING crafted at all!!!
-A french memo board or a crafty calendar/day planner that has the days divided into hours until at least 10 pm.  I have a weird schedule :-).
-A crafty frame for a dry erase board?  Weird idea, I know
-Anything to help me stay organized. Boxes, bins, bags, whatev!
-A fun apron
-Cold weather accessories I am always cold this time of year fingerless gloves, scarves, hats, socks, legwarmers.  Thank you Cinnamonteal!!!!!
-A scoodie
-Cowls/neckwarmers
-Jewelry or accessories I really love things that are symbolic of my passions, so like an open birdcage representing freedom or open handcuffs...anythin g that makes a statement, be creative!
-Or a t-shirt or bag like this^^^^^
-A crafty recipe holderbook, box, etc?
-Tea wallet Thanks PurpleLime/Sarah!!!!
-Something to hold my jewelry, like a jewelry tree or something to hang on a wall.  It's all in a plastic bin now
-Crafty little bags, like cosmetic bags or lipstick bags or wallets or anything.  So cute!
-A makeup brush roll/bag for travel
-Passport or checkbook cover
-Something gnome-y
-A surprise!!!! Could be wisty or otherwise inspired by....anything!

Extras/supplies:
-Tea or coffee anything
-Chocolate, especially dark
-Sari/brocade/satin/ethnic/world fabrics for a quilt I'm making.  Small pieces/scraps are great or clothing to upcyle (pics in my wist)
-Yarn!  Anything soft ;-)
-Old magazines-knitting, cooking, lifestyle like Martha Stewart or Real Simple-type, home dcor, whatev

Here is my wist: http://wists.com/swickeredps, disregard the wedding stuff on there.  I'm totally single, but have been helping out friends and family with weddings this year and haven't deleted stuff from the wist.  :-)

Hi guys!  My birthday was actually yesterday and I just remembered about the birthday swap this morning, lol.  Needless to say, I'm joining a little late - filling out my form and getting it sent in right now.  I already have some ideas for who/what I want to claim.  So excited!

Happy Birthmas Season, October babies! <3
9  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Re: Watercolor Orphans... on: May 26, 2010 10:06:55 PM
Nice work :-)  I like that there is a greater range of shade and value in your portraits and I felt like it was a really great use of the medium and technique to portray the emotion and vulnerability.

I'm actually planning a series of paintings to raise awareness around human trafficking and the sex trade, so it's kind of a similar idea--yours totally encourage me!!
10  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / American-made fabrics? on: May 10, 2010 06:42:43 PM
Hi all,

I have a friend whose family has recently decided to stop purchasing products that may have been made overseas to avoid supporting unethical working conditions.  It turns out that clothing made in America with American-made materials is pretty expensive--I think she said she found jeans for her kids for around $90 and she's got 4 young children!

Does anybody know of any good resources for made-in-the-USA fabrics, threads, buttons, etc?  We've found several online that have some basic selections, but I'd be interested in local connections, small businesses, whatever you all could give me.

Thanks!!!
