I am a dollar store addict so when I saw this challenge I got really excited and went a little crazy in the brain with ideas.  In fact this challenge turned out to be a real challenge for me because I had to limit myself to one idea.  I decided that since we (my boyfriend and I) were hosting a 4th of July party, decorations was the direction to go in.  I am not usually a wreath type of person but I was browsing pintreat and saw a really cool 4th of July wreath and inspiration was born.

I didn't take a picture of what I bought but the list is:

4 packages of different sized Styrofoam balls
1 twig wreath
1 string of red, white and blue stars

From my stash I used:

blue, white and red spray paint
rebar wire
silver scrapbook paper

The don't always like how things I make turn out but I am pretty proud of this one.  It is completely crazy but the 4th is all about fireworks and I think the theme is carried out in this wreath.  I had to take a picture of it not on the door because my front door isn't the greatest.

***update*** the wreath survived the party...gotta love that dollar store!

I am so glad that so many people like how it turned out.  It really is a very easy project that anyone can do!
26  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Dollar Store Pendant Light on: May 13, 2013 06:43:31 AM
I recently moved into the darkest house that you can imagine....well at least the living room is horribly dark with only one window.  I decided that an overhead light was just the thing to make my living room livable but I had to work around the lack of electrical in our ceilings.  I thought and thought about what kind of light I wanted and then I saw a string pendant light on pintreat.  I decided to take the idea and make it my own.  I made a trip to the dollar store found the pendant lighting electrical thingy (not sure what it is called), 3 different types of string (thin hemp string, thicker hemp and twine) and a beach ball.  I dug out some glue from my stash, filled a big bowl with watered down glue and soaked the string/rope for a minute.  I then started wrapping the string around the ball.  I repeated the same thing with the two other sizes of string/rope.  I think that different types of string give the light a great texture.

28  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Pennies are so cool on: May 10, 2013 06:51:49 AM
I was on pintrest (where I spend way too much time  Smiley )and saw the most fabulous kitchen floor made of pennies.  I decided then and there I had to have a coffee table covered in pennies and luckily I had just the coffee table to do it to.  My boyfriends sister had just closed her offices and gave us a marble top coffee table.  The marble was so beautiful I decided it had to be the top of the kitchen island leaving me with a base to a fancy coffee table.  I got the boyfriend to build a simple wood top that fit the coffee table and I went to work sanding and painting.  I then super glued $18 worth of pennies to the top of the table.  I then had the boyfriend pour thick poly over all of the pennies.  I LOVE how it turned out.  Unfortunately it does not photograph well.

29  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Wood Slices to the Rescue on: May 10, 2013 06:29:24 AM
I live with a man that feels it necessary to have a dart board in our living room.  When I moved in with him he had the UGLIEST dart board set up and I just couldn't allow that to continue.  I told him that if he allowed me to change the backing for the dart board then it could stay.  After much contemplation and research I decided that I would make a board covered in slices of wood.  I got Art (the man I live with and am about to marry) to start cutting 1 inch thick wood slices.  I had no idea I was taking on a massive project.  I thought maybe 100 slices of wood would be enough...not even close Art ended up cutting 523 slices.  Along the way we ran out of wood so I asked art to cut down a tree (a small one) in our yard, he came back with a tree that was shaped like a heart...totally awesome and wonderfully romantic. Any who as Art cut I stained.  I decided that I wanted to have some depth to the board so I chose 4 different stains.  Once the slices were dry I started the huge task of making them all fit.  It was the hardest puzzle I have ever done!  That being said it was COMPLETELY worth it because I love how it turned out!
