1  Re: 50 Projects 2013--You Know You Can Do It! Join here and post your lists ! in Craftalongs by DawnsTrees on: May 29, 2013 11:50:17 AM
I just caught up with all of the amazing projects that have been going on here! Too many to mention - I love all of them!

I have been really absent for awhile - after a few horrendously busy months, I just filed my dissertation last week! I will actually get to participate in graduation in June (yay!) (and have my whole family show up at my house... yay?). So although I want to celebrate by crafting, I actually have to catch up on all the housework, yardwork, and other work that I have been neglecting for the last six months... (just when I thought I would be able to relax!).

But, I am making some thank-you gifts for my committee members. The only one that I have done is for my chair.

His thank you card:

We had talked about infusing drinks (he likes a good cocktail occasionally) so about three weeks ago I started a ginger vodka infusion. I also found an awesome bottle at Goodwill. I think I went  a bit over the top with the decorations for it (they are not practical when pouring) but I like the drawer-pull cork stopper.

You can see a little of the ginger that I added in the bottle. After pouring off the vodka, I now have a ton of vodka infused ginger that I need to figure out what to do with!

Hanging from the back is a metal oval that I stamped "Thank you" on. After trying three times I realized that I really need to work on my stamping skills (it seems like it should be so easy!)

I am hoping to give it to him today or tomorrow.

So many amazing projects! Love the Star Wars bag, yummy looking faux chocolate bunnies, beautiful baby blanket and super cool eggs!

I am doing a big upload of the projects I have been working on - sorry for the picture overload!

I made this necklace / wrap around bracelet with green wire and various green beads. I got the gorgeous round green beads from lindyv321 two years ago for a birthday swap and have been waiting for the right project to come up!

I am going to a conference tomorrow and wanted to bring some items for the silent auction. I had wanted to make pendants, but it was too cold and the resin came out cloudy  Angry
So, I made magnets and boxes instead  Grin
Boxes

I have a couple other projects that I am working on, but since I only seem to be able to craft a few hours here and there it may be awhile before I can post any more finished projects!

Sheepblue - I love your art!

Yikes - I seem to have misplaced February... just not sure where it went....

So, I finally finished a couple more projects (honestly I finished them earlier in the month but am just getting them posted now)

First, these are number magnets on a metal whiteboard that I made for a child of a friend of mine. To get the look, I painted the wood disks a light yellow and then when dry I painted them blue. Once that was dry I sanded the edges and took some of the blue color off, added the numbers and then used a spray resin on them.

I also made something for his sister. She likes hair accessories, so I made her a box to hold her hair pretties in.
(sorry for the messy table shots!)

I added ribbon on both sides so that she could put hair clips/bands that wouldn't fit into the drawers.

An action shot. You can just see inside the drawers - I painted the sided super glittery and put some brown velour type fabric on the bottom of the drawers.

Love all the projects! Those tins are great!!

I am finally able to post some pictures!!

I made my first multimedia piece - it took me a lot longer than I expected, but I am pleased with how it turned out!
In the 2012 craft-a-long I posted some painted papers that I made:
I used them (plus one or two more) and made this:

The quote is: "And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair" ~Kahlil Gilbran

Here is a closer view of the flowers

I finally etched! (I posted about it and the disaster I had while trying it here).

Some bookmarks made with random repurposed jewelry:

These are going to go to a little girl who loves hair goodies - the bead one was made in 2012 (It frustrated me at the time so I don't think I ever counted it  Roll Eyes ). I painted the bobby pins with nail polish. The three flowers in the back are not completed and will be used in a different project. I think I will also make a ribbon hanger for these, but we will see if I have the time.

I finally finished the angel necklace for my mother-in-law! The little angel with the purple bead has a loose jump-ring placed over the bead head so it looks like it has a loose halo. I think it is my favorite part (which no one will ever see without it being pointed out!)

and a snowman necklace for my sister-in-law (small photo since it isn't very exciting)

5  Etched pendants plus a disaster in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by DawnsTrees on: January 22, 2013 12:19:09 AM
I have wanted to try metal etching for quite a while, and last week I decided that I HAD to try it soon. So, I went out got some ferric chloride and then sat and stared at it, slightly afraid, for a few days. Over the weekend I got my nerve up and tried it.

I had three different metals all of which should have worked (read "should have" twice). I used sharpie pens as the resist on all three and then after reading multiple websites I made floats out of some styrofoam and duct tape and went for it.

After twenty minutes, nothing. So I set the timer for another 15 minutes. I went in and knew immediately that there was a problem with one of them, but I will return to that in just a minute...

I am pretty pleased with the first two though!

This one is a dandelion - the little heart at the bottom turned out a little different than I expected, it looks broken which was not my intent, but it is interesting...

This one is my daughter's initial - it will probably be made into a bookmark since she isn't likely to wear it as a necklace.

So, I said I would return to the problem one. I walked in and it was bubbling and giving off a lot of heat. I grabbed it, ran around in circles, and finally got it outside. The reaction stopped sometime overnight (I am sure that the freezing weather didn't hurt).

Yuck!

Obviously, the metal was not pure and it reacted poorly with the etching solution. I still have not gotten the nerve up to deal with the mess! (the whole thing will probably be put into a bag with baking powder to neutralize it and then taken to a hazardous waste facility). Lesson learned - and now passed on to you - make sure you know exactly what the metal is that you are using!

While the disaster has me a bit leery I am pleased with the other two for first attempts. I will try again!!

AlishaMisha - I still want to try etching. I will need to put it on my list for next year (again)...

WaggonsWest - super cute runner and pillows!

I am so far behind on my crafting. I am just now getting out my holiday cards  Roll Eyes

Here are a few more that I made:

This one has a lot of shiny around the edges - I really liked how it turned out

This one was one of my favorites and took me the absolute longest  - the shiny white portions are actually a silver glitter pen (this is also the one that my daughter told me that I shouldn't be spending the time since the recipient will glance at it and throw it away - disheartening)

Another one, was a little less happy with it

Here I began to get tired of making cards and went with a much faster card...

And then, I decided I didn't have enough time. For most of the rest, I repurposed old cards by adding random things to premade cards (either drawing on them or adding googly eyes etc)

I have a couple presents that are going to be late, but wanted to share the first step for one of them - painted paper. I will be using these in a project, so you will see them again later (and I really hope that it turns out!)

I have a number of half done presents, but they will probably not be done until January. This is my annual statement: next year I will be done earlier! (I am so impressed with all of you who are done and have done such amazing things!!)

I finally got a few pictures of some of the things I have been working on. Sorry for the picture overload...

I have been making a ton of cards for some reason... I think I have over thirty made. They are primarily black and white with sparkly accents (which generally does not show up in the photos)

Awhile ago I commented that I had spilled coffee on some of my cards Sad   I had put too much time into them to just throw them away. So, I tried to "antique" them by painting them all over with coffee and then used coffee grounds on them and a little bit of brown ink on the corners. These were three of the 5 that got coffee on them. I wish they were still white, but they turned out okay.

Here are a couple pieces of jewelry that I have been working on. This first one is well over a year in progress  Roll Eyes  I made the clay portion forever ago, made the paper bead and added the watch parts (which are not very noticeable in the picture) and resin a few months ago, and finally put all the chains etc on a couple of weeks back. Phew.

While this one is simple, I like how it turned out. The red beads are these gorgeous deep red (they look much brighter in this picture than they really are)

I made this necklace / earrings before summer as a summer set - unfortunately I caught it on something when wearing it and had to repair it. This made me realize I had never taken a picture of it...

I have a few more pendant / necklaces that I am working on. With luck I will get them done in the next few weeks.

Very cool Big Box of Kid Fun! Those rocks look great!

I received today from missmelmarie. She claims that she had trouble with the items and had to re-do them, for which I am sorry, but I am super glad at the same time because they turned out so great!

Here is the two fabric t-shirt scarf - yes, it is hanging on my thermostat, but that is just so you can see how cool it is! (*groan* even I know that wasn't punny...)

A great wristlet - the back side is made out of the same blue fabric that is in the second panel from the right

The zipper and inside of the wristlet - a bright pop of pink!

Thank you missmelmarie!! I will definitely enjoy using both items!

I finally can post some of the things I have been working on. Sorry this is going to be a bit long...

Some fabric flowers (some of these were sent in the March birthday swap)

Inchies (again for the March birthday swap)

Inchie house card

Pendant (glass tile with paper on the back and charm on front):

I just went to a Sociology conference and decided to make some jewelry that my peers would appreciate. This one was my favorite - I used the packing tape transfer method. I really want to figure out a better transfer method where the image is directly on the wood, but this worked.
Dubois necklace

So that I am not taking up too much space the rest will be thumbnails:

Quote poster (for March Pinterest Swap)

Cards
(gel medium on tissue paper flowers)

(seed bead flower)

I made seven different pendants with theorists who made an impact in sociology. In my opinion, these three turned out the best. They were made with paper and transparencies glued to the back of glass.
Gramsci pendant

Marx pendant

Dubois pendant

I am planning on making more of these - they were very well received. I really like the feel of these, but I worry about how well they are going to hold together, so I want to try a slightly different method of making them next time.
