I like the motif.  The bird adds that nice finishing touch.  Was that hard to cut out of duct tape?
16  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / cheery sunflowers small tutorial on: October 06, 2011 10:40:10 PM
I saw this pattern in an Annie's book of fridgies  pattern club leaflet. The flowers are supposed to be glued to a magnet.  I thought they would make a cheery arangement.   Since I can't move around too much, I had to figure how to make them with things that were already at home.  Here's how.

The flowers are basic: R1: chain 2, 6 sc in 2nd chain from hook. R2: 2 sc in each sc (12) R3: sc in 1st sc, inc in next sc around (18) fasten off.  Change color, slip stitch in 1st sc, chain 15, slip stitch in next sc around for 18 loops ss in first stitch fasten off.

I had some 7 mm google eyes, they were glued on.  I used red yarn for smiley mouth.  I glued a bamboo skewer to the back, pointy side down, and glued a felt circle to hid that.  I let them dry really well.  Then I took some green floral tape and wrapped it around the skewer.  I decided not to make leaves.  The flowers looked like this:

I picked out an empty container I had lying around.  I looked high and low for some styrofoam and couldn't find any.  I tried plastic bags, but the flowers kept falling over.  I thought maybe beans,  no, not enough beans.  Buttons?  no.  Rice. not enough rice in house.  Styrofoam cup, hmmm.  I cut the rim placed it upside down in the container and wrapped plastic bags around to keep in place.  Tada!!  Here's what that looks like.

The flowers went in and stayed put.  (here I had to glue some googly eyes back in place)  Then I couldn't find moss or tissue to cut up to look like grass or excelsior or anything.  AArgh!!  Mom, use that candy corn you have in the cupboard.  They're disgusting.  Nobody eats them!! says the bright daughter.  ( I eat them, I think to myself, but I better not admit this)  And voila,  cheery sunflowers in a few hours that didn't cost a thing.
