How hot do you set the iron?

Hi! Sorry it took me forever to see this. I think I had the iron on low. Smiley It was plenty hot enough to get the job done!

The key is to not color too heavy and make it too waxy.
Agreed! I've colored a little heavy in some spots before and it always smudges. It's about finding that right balance to make the colors bright, without using too much crayon. Smiley

Also, thanks to everyone! I hope all of you who haven't yet tried it will give it a whirl. It truly is so much fun!
2  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: Hoopla Swap R11: Words With or Without Words - GALLERY on: September 01, 2014 04:02:18 PM
That is really pretty. What were the words that inspired it?

One of alittlemusthave's words was "bird" and she had a bunch of really pretty bird hoops on her pinterest, so I used those as inspiration!

The crochet around the frame really highlights the beauty of the bird!

Who made this piece?

I did! Thanks so much! I'm just so happy it finally arrived. Smiley

Thanks to everyone else as well! Loving everything in the gallery.

I received from Alittlemusthave today!

My goodness, guys.. I was so excited when I opened this! I even did a little squeal! Cheesy

I had said in the questionnaire that I'd like any Harry Potter quote, and this is perfect.

The stitches are neat and pretty, the fabric tinting is awesome, and the tiny wand is so adorable!

Thanks so much!! It's living happily on my hoopla wall. Smiley

Thanks, everyone!  Smiley

OMG I love this so much! I've never tried crayon tinting but you made it sound so easy!

Part of my problem is I never think to try it until I've already started stitching.

I've thought about it after I started stitching a few times, too.. I think maybe if I looked for patterns with crayon tinting already in mind, it will be easier to find some that would work well. That might be a good way get more practice (and not forget!). Cheesy

It was so much fun! I really hope you try it!

I'll definitely be signing up for this! I just need to take a few days to think about my favorite words/quotes! Super excited. Smiley
10  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Godzilla Embroidery (My first time crayon tinting!) on: June 04, 2014 05:35:03 PM

I embroidered this for my boyfriend a few days ago. He said he wanted me to surprise him and I thought this pattern would be perfect!

(here's a link to where I found it)
http://zuill.us/andreablog/2009/06/28/julys-embroidery-pattern/

It's pretty much all back stitch, with two strands of floss. The only exceptions were the eyes and teeth - for those I only used one strand of black. Also, the dot in his eye is a teeny tiny french knot!

As for the crayon tinting, it was super simple. I had never done it before, but I wanted to try something new and make Godzilla a little bit more special.

Basically, all I did was:
1. Trace the pattern onto my fabric with a pencil (pencil is best, because you can easily hide it with your stitches).
2. Put fabric in a hoop and pull tight (this makes it easy to color with the crayons).
3. Color inside the pencil lines.
4. Iron the design between two sheets of regular printer paper to set the crayon and soak up any excess wax.
5. Embroider as I usually would.

It was so easy and I think it makes him really pop! I love this technique so much.

Here's a closer view of the stitches.

Hope you guys like him! Smiley Thanks for looking!
