That's an awesome idea. I love girls who can pull off canvasy flats, I see them at shows all the time. But the idea of cutting into my beloved Cons makes me want to cry! I've just got the little guys to the right stage of grimy, stepped on and righteous.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot..where do you find the boning material...I really want to make a corset but I have no idea where to find boning for it.

I know you can get Rigilene and other plastic boning hidden away in the haberdashery section of most sewing stores - it's usually in a box with a wicked sketch of some 1960s woman in a strapless gown on it. You might want to hit up the internet for steel or spiral boning if that's what you want, though, because i've yet to see it in any store.
