2641  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Embroidery Hoopla R4 - Diptych Round!! (SU CLOSED, SO 3/21/11) on: March 22, 2011 12:07:52 PM

2642  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / Re: March-long spin-along! (or fiber stash busting event!) on: March 21, 2011 07:37:34 AM
So I finished re-washing my fleece and picking out more of the VM. Turns out I wasn't very diligent about the first time. Well, I think the last 1/3rd of it I was and that was on top of the pile but the rest wasn't and that's why it was fine at first and then hell. Still haven't combed any in a while, need to finished my hoops and shop and wash and maybe start another swap...? *sigh* I've taken on too much. I will get it done, though. Maybe not this month but...

I talked to the lady in charge of the young women at church yesterday and sometime during the summer I might teach them how to spin on a spindle for their Wednesday night activity! I am so excited! I am going to make all the spindles myself and order some fiber from Sheep Shed. OOH! I am so excited!

ETA: Cyndi: thank you for everything you just told everyone! That tip about the fleece int he dryer might help me next month. You are so knowledgeable! How can I ever really thank you for that?

I LOST MY HOOP! And then husband found it because he is smarter than I am. But I didn't get it finished because of said failure, so probably work on it ALL DAY today after I grocery shop/wash dishes and send tomorrow but maybe Wednesday at the latest? Maybe I can convince my 4 year old that story time at the library (across from the PO) is really where we need to go this week.
2644  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Re: 1st spin ever! :) on: March 20, 2011 02:16:58 PM
I have been spinning for a year and I'm still not perfect with my thicknesses. Also, it does depend on the fiber. I tried to spin ome bamboo/merino blend thick and it wouldn't let me, it kept slipping to thin so it is very thick and thin.

As for where to get fiber, it is all over Etsy.com. My favorite store is knit.etsy.com, she has some great fiber clubs. For beginners I would definitely recommend thesheepshedstudio. com/rovings. There is a discussion with testimonials about it as a sticky in the spinning discussion forum. The fiber is cheap--roving for $8.50 USD/lb rather than the average $4/oz of the dyed nifty stuff on Etsy--but still really good quality fiber. I love it! I am ordering some today to get ready for teaching the girls at church this summer.

I love your colors! This is not a bad yarn at all. Working up thick and thin yarn makes me so happy. You get texture that is otherwise impossible.

Don't miss our Fiber Friday threads. It's where everyone posts their yarn(s) from the week and there are some truly inspiring spinners on these boards.

*!*! Another convert to the ways of the spinster!*!*

I ran out of floss #___! Oh noes! Good thing I know the biggest productive hoarder ever! Maybe I can call her and she'll bring me some to church.

Did you actually get the blue from Sheep Shed, or did you dye it blue?
Yes, sometimes Sheep Shed has some colors for the same price as the main cheap stuff (8.50/lb) and I got some blue. They also sell dyed locks and stuff, you know. I need to get in on that before she stops doing it.
And your yarns are laughable, they are learnable!

Laughing Lark, are you kidding?! A spinny noddy? I am so happy! I want one! Right now!

Travelgirl, yay! Another spinning convert! Those are great for first yarns. I personally don't like the brown from Sheep Shed but it is great to learn on.

Hippie, I prefer to call it my "bambino" yarn! Where are your contributions?!

Astor, I LOVE those colors!

Puppygirl: amazing!

Did I miss anyone? If I did I'm sorry! I usually don't like it when people make a post talking to EVERYONE else individually, but there are so many greats this week!
2647  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Re: My overspun thick and thin very first yarn! on: March 19, 2011 12:31:07 PM
I love the texture of it! Did you get the yardage yet?
2648  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Re: More yarn love! on: March 19, 2011 12:29:42 PM
I do enjoy! I really enjoy the stuff from the felting bag!
2649  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Re: Corespinners -- where do you buy your core yarn? on: March 18, 2011 06:44:21 PM
I talked to Dorothy today, she already sold those cotton cones I was talking about. Sad

I finished the bamboo/merino blend I was working and I can finally post pictures! I am so happy!
I had 4 oz that I split in 2 and spun different. The first was spun thin and then Navajo plied to make 56 yards:

And the second half I wanted to spn thick but it wouldn't let me so it came out thick and thin. I plied it with white sewing thread to make 72 yards. I love how it is so different from the above

and then I just really wanted to spin something so I broke into my  pounds of Sheep Shed roving and alternated between chunks of blue and chunks of white to Navajo plied into 75 yards of this:

In other news, I did not get my quota combed for the Craft along this week because i had to wash it some more, but now that it is cleaner I am combing much faster so maybe I can get through the rest of the fleece before the months end? AFTER I finish these swaps?!
