311  Mario! in Halloween Costumes by jexxican on: November 03, 2010 03:55:01 PM
Oh my goodness, there were so many Marios on Halloween! BUT None of the ones I saw looked as good (read: authentic) as ours, and none of them had Peach or Toadette or even Luigi for that matter. What the heck, guys?

First off, their overalls are blue because they are DENIM people, come on...

For my boys I made their hats and their mustaches. That's all. But you don't really need to make much for those two, right?

I couldn't really get a good pic of Toadette. I made her pants and shirt from a McCall's pattern. I crocheted her hat using a generic slouchy hat pattern with some generic balls for her braids or whatever she has. I stuffed it with polyfil and used the sleeve of a shirt sewn into a head shape to keep the stuffing in. I think it came out pretty rad. For her vest I just traced a shirt of hers onto some red fabric and used that for the pattern.
She was awesome! Her costume was my favorite. (Yes, Toadette is a real character, and yes some of the younger kids at the Trunk-or-Treat we went to actually knew who she was without being told!)

I know, that's not an authentic Peach pose. Bah.
For MY costume, I made the dress from a pattern that I altered slightly. I think it was a Queen of Hearts dress with long sleeves? Yeah, and I made the crown and I made the jewel on the front of the dress, attached with some hot-glue on a safety pin.
And this lady I know has everything in her, like she really has built 3 more buildings just to keep all the stuff she has in (all of your craftsters would die of joy if you were given the option of rummaging, I'm sure) and she happened to have
-my husband's overalls
-a crinoline
-and a PINK UMBRELLA! Holy cow!
I'm not kidding, so much stuff. If only I'd thought of visiting her before I shopped for ANY of it...

I forgot!

G even made the candy box and carved the pumpkins to match our theme!

I don't care about winning this contest, I don't think anyone will vote for me at all, but I did feel the need to share this somewhere and why not here?

312  What to do? in Quilting: Discussion and Questions by jexxican on: November 03, 2010 03:11:12 PM
So we were cleaning out my mom's old house which has turned into a really nasty storage receptacle and we found this sealed in a nice clean plastic bag:

I brought it home because I thought it was a cross stitch quilt my sister was working on back in the day, but it's not! It's like someone bought this little Precious Moments quilt, ripped off the trim, and cut it into 5 pieces! In fact, I'm pretty sure that's exactly what happened. My questions:
1) Why would anyone do that?
2) What so I do with it?
Anyone have an answer to either of those?

313  Apple Bucket Pin Up in Needlework: Completed Projects by jexxican on: October 15, 2010 06:28:59 AM
I was in the Pin Up swap and I wanted to make an apron for my partner and I found some apple fabric in my stash and hey, she made candy apples for a living so what better fabric? So I looked for an image that would work and found this. Dude, I hope I don't get in trouble for embroidering it.

Yay! learning to embroider is fun!

314  Checker board in Quilting: Completed Projects by jexxican on: October 15, 2010 06:07:14 AM
Disclaimer: I'm not a quilter.

I found a tute for felting stones at Resurrection Fern and really wanted to make them but I can't just make things to be pretty (usually) so I decided to make a lot of them, dye them in Kool-Aid, and make a checker's board to go with them. For my niece. For Christmas. (mind you I thought of this in like May or June)

So I attempted a mini quilt a couple weeks ago for the checkers board! AH! Not great, but it serves it's purpose AND I don't even have to wrap it. Check it out:

There's 3 different shades of rock per side, but you can tell they are all supposed to be pink/blue.

All wrapped up for Christmas! The ribbon is sewn into the side.

315  Fiber Friday 15 Oct 2010 in Spinning: Completed Projects by jexxican on: October 15, 2010 05:25:05 AM
I have never started one but here I go! I am so excited!
First, the less exciting one: I got some blacks from the Sheep Shed Studio and the last of them have been sitting in my drawer for some time now so I pull them out, spun 'em up, and started to loom-knit a scarf (cause I was excited!) and then I ran out and now I am waiting for more...

AND NOW THE EXCITING STUFF! A lady I know from MOPS gave me some fleece last year right off her own sheep that her dad won't let her wash SO...
I washed it.
I carded some of it (I think I need combs instead of cards).
I spun it.
I plied it.
And since there was still some grassy stuff in there, I set the twist using tea instead of regular water so it hides the gunk and gives it a really nice sepia tone.

and for a better sense of the color:

Disclaimer: I know this might not be all the great compared to some of you veteran sheep washers but I am really proud of this yarn! It has lots of the little tiny bumps of wool and is very "slubby" but that's why I said maybe I need combs?

316  Re: October MOH Gallery in The Swap Gallery by jexxican on: September 27, 2010 02:47:21 PM
Oh wow, hawk eyes girl really did a good job. So anxious! I know mine for her is nothing that great, but that's why I'm on swap hiatus for a while...

I received from Najaorama!
There was no note so let's see if I can place each of the items with their OH.

For ROCKtober there are some great guitars for my wreath along with a Rex Manning Day ornament:

For dictionary day, a hot pad (?) with a word for each letter with great definitions like "Jury: Twelve men chosen to decide who has the better lawyer" and "Keyhole: a frequent test for sobriety." The backing fabric makes me happy.

And as an extra she sent some picture stickers for Free Thought day (I think).

This swap is to celebrate those unknown or unusual holidays. Each swapper will chose 6 holidays from the lists provided. Each partner will choose from those 6 holidays and craft 3 small items for their partner. A small item is defined as: by time-2 or less hours; by size-earrings, stickers, wallets, pouches, bookmarks, magnets; by price-$10 or less. U.S. packages MUST have a DC#, and international packages must have a receipt. Please provide both to the organizer when you ship. Shipping priority is suggested but not a requirement.

In order for this to be a monthly swap we MUST have a fast turn around time. Due to the fast turn around time, the organizer reserves the right to not add someone to the swap if there has been a documented history of repeated late sending. Please do not sign up for this swap unless you are prepared to send on time, if not early, and post pictures as soon as your package arrives.

Communication is a must! You must check in on the original thread and the gallery thread at least once a week. You also must check in with your partner once a week. Poor communication or lack thereof will be noted in feedback.  You MUST PM Jexxican with your questionnaire,  received, late sending, and any other questions or concerns.

When PMing the organizer please start pms with the following:  MOH October

320  Roller derby, Odd holidays, and a dragonfly in Needlework: Completed Projects by jexxican on: August 28, 2010 03:33:38 PM
This is everything I've completed since my first embroidery, found here

First up, for the 3rd package on the Make a Friend swap I embroidered the logo for the roller derby league my new friend is a part of. I had a hard time on the face on the face and the skates. Meh, I'm learning.

For the latest odd holiday swap (September) I embroidered some mushrooms on an apron for Mushroom month:

I don't know if I did so many French knots because I like them or if I told myself I would like them because I had already planned it that way.

And this is one of the things I made for Punctuation Day next month. It was a lot of fun!

And for my pen pal (whom I met through Post Secret) I made a very simple negative space dragonfly!

And I'm almost done with something for another swap I'm in but I can't post pics yet because I can't! AH! I like it, though. Be expecting something new (and totally awesome if I don't mess it up completely) from me in a few weeks!
