521  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Re: Adding a zipper to crochet? on: August 17, 2009 07:53:46 PM
I sew mine with a sewing machine and treat it like any other fabric.

Though I use some ribbon (or you could use bias tape but I like the decorative look of the ribbon) on the wrong side of the fabric. It acts as a stabilizer and can make machine sewing over the crochet go smoother.

I baste the ribbon in, sew in the zipper and then remove the basting.

522  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Discussion and Questions / Backing Your Embroidery on: August 17, 2009 07:41:50 PM
I've just started on my first embroidery project. I'm embroidering muslin squares that I'll be sewing into a quilt.

I'm not sure how I should go about backing the embroidery pieces though. I'm worried that once the quilt gets used that my embroidery could get snagged or pulled. I was thinking of ironing on some light weight interfacing to the back of the blocks to sort of "seal" in the stitches.

Do any of you do this? Would it really be necessary or should it be fine without the interfacing?

Any advice is appriciated. Smiley

This seems like the perfect challenge for me to try out.

-It totally fits in my small crafting budget at the moment.

-I have a dollar store across the street from my home. Smiley

I'll have to go wander over and see if inspiration hits.

525  NEWS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT CRAFTSTER / Introduce Yourself / Hi from Seattle on: August 16, 2009 10:45:18 AM
Hi all Smiley

I've been lurking around the craftster boards for years....and well finally decided I should join in a bit. Smiley

My name is April. I'm a mid-thirtys, single mom to a rocking 4 year old girl, a hairstylist, horror buff and all around crafty sorta person.

I've been crafting since I could hold scissors and glue. Smiley Over the years I've probrably dabbled in just about every type of craft out there from knitting and crochet, to papercrafts, to quilting and making my own clothes.

Though knitting/crochet and collage/assemblage are my favorite pastimes these days...I've been trying out embroidery for the first time and really enjoying it. Smiley

Nice to meet you all...I enjoy meeting new people so feel free to message me for any reason.
