I've got the same free pattern in a hoop at the moment, I'm going to sew the completed Aida onto a tea towel for the kitchen.

I was just going to have the words, but I was watching Zombieland as I was finishing it up and thought to myself, "This really needs a proton pack border." Four hours of staring at a prop image and several stills of the movie, et voila!



The rainbow-looking thing is some scrap threads bundled together to try and emulate a ribbon connector on the prop proton pack. The proton stream is 6 strands of ecru couched by 1 strand of some random pink I had floating around. Looking at stills of the film, the proton streams are bright white in the middle, shading to red along the edges, and I figured this would be the cross stitch version of that. I had a lot of debate about how much detail to go into, but I like the simpler styles, and I felt a bit more down-home country simplicity complimented the font and the size of the piece rather than going whole hog nerdtastic photorealistic.

It's cute, but I have one worry. The hospital I work at doesn't accept donations of stuffed animals because they can carry and spread germs very easily. Have you checked with your local hospital that they will accept these? If not, there's always local police and fire departments, who often collect stuffed animals to give to children who have been in various traumas.

I think your painting is much nicer than the source picture!
