1  Nemo (not the fish- NOT THE FISH) Costume in Costumes: Completed Projects by skull+crossbonesstitch on: June 05, 2010 12:14:54 PM
One of the costumes for my latest in a long line of photography projects (which I really should get around to posting, even if its only to justify thier existance). Origionally this character was just going to be a nameless witch nessecery to point other, more important characters, in the right direction but when I was working on her costume I must have got carried away. Its far more elabourate thn I origionally intended, more elabourate in fact then anything I've done for this project before. But I absolutely adore it and I'm really proud of it... my only worry is that I won't be able to top this and she'll have the most impressive costume even though she's barely going to be in the story. (I did consider scrapping the entire thing and making it about HER but people already get whiplash from my stories without suddenly having a minor character being more important then anything else. I shall have to talk myself into doing a spin-off of some kind lol). Anyway, without further ado or insane rambling I present to you...

Nemo the Sea Witch

Sorry about the horrible photos, my phone does some evil things to images and I just HAD to finish it all on he day someone borrowed my camera.

I wouldn't be surprised if you can't see anything at all here... must get some better ones but I was prety excited about this (I'm literally bouncing as I type, in fact several people on msn are considering sending emergency tea and strawberry cupcakes)

I should probably explain HOW I went from nameless minor character to the woman who is currently crowding my already busy thoughts... frankly I blame my mate Pippa. She's annotation queen and can write a whole essay on tiny sketch and is always bugging because my method is more... get stuff, make stuff, think about clearing up. Anyway, I decided to shut her up to do this strange thing called a 'project' diary and write a billion and one pages explaining to an inanimate object why I did various things. Not a good idea it transpires, because when I think about when I'm doing I'm more likely to think of something BRILLIANT. (Not what you want when you're trying to make one simple blouse to go with a skirt I already made and stick it on a character called, for the purposes of identification, sea witch1)

In short (because I've written too much already... typical me) listening to the Nightwish song Nemo gaveme the awesome idea of a wannabe nameless character recovering from some strange mysterious event in the past. At the time I only remembered the Disney Pixar Nemo which is why the sea witch came into my head. When I lookd it up later I found that its actually Latin for no one (should have seen that coming, my Latin needs work) and is a name shared by Odyseus when he faces the Cyclops and a character from Ten Thousand Leagues Under The Sea. No women though but that doesn't matter to me. So my witch is now called Nemo.

Argh, I'm rambling again and I'd be amazed if anyone actually read this much... so I'll be good and just talk about the stupid costume. I made all of it except my leggings from scratch, no patterns. The skirts are easy, six squares with holes cut in the middle (heavy AND twirly). There's three black, a green and two blue (one blue has a ruffled trim along the front hem). The shirt is stripy and currently only has two buttons but because of the cincher I don't think I really need to worry about that. The headscarf is scrap black fabric that I haven't done anything to yet, I'm not sure what if anything it needs (the costume is pretty fussy as it is). The main thing about it is the belt, which is just black elastic and ribbon with dozens of little charms and things hanging off it meaning I sound like a windshime when I walk. I forgot exactly what I've got on there but there's a few hearts, an ankh, a pirate medallion, some semi-precious stones. All stuff I've accumulated.

Well, hope people like it despite my erractic and probably senseless writing. C+C welcome and I should really get that cup of tea before I bounce outta the Milky Way.

Have an awesome day/night awesome crafty peoples

2  Untouched... in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by skull+crossbonesstitch on: April 13, 2010 05:38:23 AM
Just another random photo of mine. This time it was taken by my little sister with my new camera (so it's actually recognisable as human- shock horror). I'm the model (I don't look like that all the time... just Sunday mornings Tongue) and I did my hair, make-up (lotsa lovely cuts and bruises you can't even see) and made the bracelet and dress. My sister wants you to know she contributed to the costume as well... she ripped my tights. A lot. Well, anyhow people, let me know what you think of our combined insanity/creativity. Hope you like it.

3  The Fate of the Queen in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by skull+crossbonesstitch on: March 31, 2010 02:48:01 AM
I can't believe I forgot about this (it lives on my bedroom wall right next to my desk- so clearly that shows how much attention I pay to the world when I'm working). After I finished my Demon Queen drawing http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=342863.0 I still felt there was more I could do with it... and ended up with this  Grin

Its mostly watercolours on... er... some kind of paper (I didn't say I was an expert Tongue) And some parts are highlighted in what I think is biro. Might be ink. Who knows? This thing is kinda massive (how the heck I forgot about it we may never know) cos each section is about A3 size trimmed down into tarot card shapes. The top one is the sorceress (should be sorcerer) with my demon queen, on the right is death and on the left is the empress. I also wrote lyrics and poetry around the aura of the queen, the throne, the mask and in the whirlyishness (well I don't know what to call it) of the death one. Hope you like it  Grin

5  Demon Queen in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by skull+crossbonesstitch on: March 30, 2010 04:22:18 AM
This is an old drawing but I figured I might as well post it now or I'll never do it Cheesy

Although I ended up calling it Demon Queen it's not quite (beware, crazy story explanation, feel free to ignore) because it's based on one of my favourite characters from one of my books, Lady Anger Caelus. She's one of the Seven Deadly Sins who serve the demon king as AssasSins until a war that divides their country and thier loyalty. The king saves Anger's life but is killed himself and she has to live wondering if he did it because he truely loved her as a person or because she was always the most loyal of his subjects.

The drawing is based on this photo (me when I was about fifteen- eek)

6  Masquerade... kinda in Costumes: Completed Projects by skull+crossbonesstitch on: March 30, 2010 04:04:37 AM
School's out and that means someone has to think of endless ways to entertain my little sister *sigh* and there's only so many times you can play hide-and-seek in our tiny little house (and I have no desire to get stuck in between the washing machine and dryer again)
So between us we amassed large piles of funky foam, ribbon, glue and some very cheap very useless cardboard masks that last for about ten seconds before selfdestructing. Two hours later...

We used the cardboard masks as templates then kinda went wild... especially with the sticky tape. The white mask rarely photographs well cos it's so shiny...

And, late at night after my boyfriend kindly woke me up to let me know he was going to bed (er, thanks), I ended up adding these to our collection...

The last one is most of the W section of a dictionary I've slowly been destroying for various craft projects.

7  Sea Witch Locket in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by skull+crossbonesstitch on: March 19, 2010 06:21:15 AM

Found a broken old locket in the shops going cheap one day and, for no reason at all, decided I had to have it. Recently I dug it out and thought I'd have a play with it, see what happened. First I scraped off all the chipped black paint (with scissors and a penknife- definetly must be a better way out there) to reveal all the shiny copper then I took off the hideously cheap-looking pink plastic 'gem'. The chain was beyond help (practically crumbled in my hands Shocked) so I sewed some blue ribbon to the loop. Then, getting all inspired and whatnot, I drew around the gem thing about six times and had a play with embossing powers and ink stamps to see what I couldn't come up with. I think I re-did the final one about ten times before I forced myself to stick it down (with pritt pads, but superglue would have been a better idea). It's a copper base with green ink splashed over it then clear enamal and holographic embossing power over it (about eight layers in total I think). And because I'm an idiot and I like playing, I stuck my thumb print on it whilst it was still wet (I wouldn't do that if you don't have incredibly insensitve thumbs like me- I'm amazed I still hav fingerprints). Then to finish it off, I cut up part of a sea themed love letter I wrote for another project, dropped on some fake blood and perfume and put it inside with a dried rose petal.

It's not massive, maybe an inch and a half long. I jut have freakishly tiny hands  Cheesy

Couple of action shots, ignore the fantastically bright flash I only got the camera this morning and I do have colour in my face (even though I have Twilight obsessed mates convinced I'm a vampire that just isn't very shiny).

I call it the sea witch locket but my sister thinks it should be lost lover's locket (how boring Tongue)
In her version it's given to a young woman by the man she love when he goes to sea and (presumably) drowns or something. But in my version a sea witch made it herself to curse the idiot sailer who left her Tongue Either way, th guys drowns but it's still (I think) a very pretty necklace

8  Angels and Eyeliner- The Demonchilde in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by skull+crossbonesstitch on: February 18, 2010 11:05:44 AM
Part two of my Curious Angel Photo story in which the Curious Angel meets two other characters, the broken dolly Demonchilde and vampiric Strangeling (my little sister and cousin with me as the fallen angel again). Not as many photos as the weather was uncooperative and we'll have to wait for a sunny (or at least not stormy) day to carry this on but I thought I'd post these anyway.
Was going to do them all black and white as with the first lot but experimenting produced varied results and most looked better in colour. Hope you like them anyway.

And let that be a lesson to you all... don't hug broken dollies in abandonned houses unless you want to be tied up in the shower and 'be their friend' forever XP

9  Angels and Eyeliner- The Curious Angel (Lotsa photos) in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by skull+crossbonesstitch on: February 13, 2010 11:34:43 AM
Looooooooong story short... I'm a crazy crafty writery inhuman being with a strange obsession with angels and demons and all things... thingy. Go figure. Anyway... was cleaning out the attic and the strangest idea popped into my head meaning that I and finally proud to announce...

Angels and Eyeliner- The Curious Angel
If you've got some kind of allergy to (lots of) dodgy black and white shots then I suggest you run for your life or something.

They're kinda based on a story I was writing for a friend a while ago about a Curious Angel who leaves Heaven to find out more about life and eventually (and predictably) falls in love. But not yet. Oh no, these shots get to be depressing and strange before we get a happy ending people. Sorry fairytale lovers (keep waiting cos after these I will certainly be doing more).

I did the costume and makeup and... stuff as well as the editing and pyysically being the angel whilst my darling little sister actually took the pictures (once she had been bribed adequetly)

But enough waffle... onto my sad little pride and joy

Sorry about the sheer amount of pictures but if you're still awake at the end of this all I'll get you a medal or soemthing. Or maybe just a cupcake, not that I think you'd complain about a cupcake.

10  Zombie Pirate Costume Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!!! in Halloween Costumes by skull+crossbonesstitch on: October 28, 2009 04:05:56 AM
Excuse the dodgy pictures...

This is my zombie/kinda a bit piratey costume but I'm not too sure it's very 'finished'. Right now it's my horrible messy hair, old black waistcoat and purple shirt (not intentionally covered in white facepaint but it happened) with two blue skirts I whipped up out of scrap fabric and elastic (ooh the twirlyness)

But I don't really know what else to do with it!

Can anyone help me?Huh
