1  Ice, Ice Baby!!... and other stuff..... in Polymer Clay: Completed Projects by KatrinaBrown on: August 04, 2009 07:02:42 AM
I found these wonderful glass cubes that enabled me to make some ornaments I had in my head for a while now.  I'm really pleased with the final result:

This is exactly what I'd hoped would happen....

I made a half dozen penguins and four snowmen on ice.

I'd done these little bears holding snowflake beads, but the beads melted in the oven. Thankfully I was able to pry the melted ones out of their hands and replace them with ones still in tact.

And, I'd promised my son that the next Goblin Guy I made would have a Mohawk.

He's got a tattoo, too!

That's all I've been up to over the past few weeks.

Thanks for lookin'!!

Comments and pointers always welcome!

2  Grurple and Mud Pie. in Polymer Clay: Completed Projects by KatrinaBrown on: July 13, 2009 10:57:02 AM
I think the coloring of Mud Pie is 'off' a bit.  I posted these on my Facebook page, and a friend's son thought the mud was blood and the dirt was his brains blasted out the back of his head. Not at ALL what I was intending but.....

Here they are!!

Mud Pie:

And Grurple, the Goblin Guard.  He's not a happy fellow.....

Some close-up shots.  I dig how the rope and robe came out....

Pointers and comments welcome!

3  Presenting.... "Crank" in Polymer Clay: Completed Projects by KatrinaBrown on: July 10, 2009 06:16:40 AM
I was SUPPOSED to be performing in MO this weekend, but the club was shut down. This economy is taking a bite out of my living! Needless to say, I was in a foul mood all day yesterday.  I should've been on the road, ready to perform by evening and the plug was pulled.  I guess my mood was reflected in this guy......

Close up of his eyes. I bought those eyes a LONG time ago.  Almost tossed them when cleaning up on quite a few occasions.  Glad I didn't!!

Some WIP pics.  I had a clump of colors that were either speckled with random bits or ones I didn't intend to use.  I got the idea to bake off a hard core and build UP off of that. MAN, did it make it easier to do this guy.  I had some papermache eggs I had intended to use as the core, but THOSE? Yeah.... those got tossed when we moved recently....

I love his feet.
All accents were "painted" with a mix of TLS, thinner, and oil paint.

This has a dowel rod in the center.

Eyes and crystal in the staff are beads.  Base is a 4 X 6 piece of wood.

Thanks for lookin'!!

4  I don't know what he is, but I like him!! in Polymer Clay: Completed Projects by KatrinaBrown on: July 07, 2009 05:08:52 AM
I was in the mood to break away from the "usual" stuff I do.  So, there isn't a bear, penguin, or snowman in sight here!!

I'm not sure WHAT this little guy is, but I like him!

Back View.  My husband said, "Wait... he's got an ear ring, a bald spot, and a goatee.... is that supposed to be ME?" (ha. ha. ha.  What a goof.)

A close up.  The lighting in my kitchen last night was really weird for some reason.

I had started some WIP pics, but once I got into the character I kinda nixed it.  Here's a close up of the rocks and the base as I was making them.

At first, my kids thought I was making a REALLY WEIRD cookie.

His eyes are plastic and the "crystal" is a marble.  The ear ring is wound wire. The base is a small disc of wood. Other than that, everything is clay.  I did the accents/highlights with a mix of liquid sculpey, thinner, and oil paints.

Thanks for looking!

Pointers and feedback are appreciated!!

5  Sculpture for my Family Reunion : IMG Loaded in Polymer Clay: Completed Projects by KatrinaBrown on: July 03, 2009 08:29:16 PM
First I'll share the pictures.  There's a story here, too, but I won't make you suffer through it if you don't want to.  Grin

Here's a pic of the piece in its entirety (except "Hysong Family Reunion" hasn't been written on the white placard & it's not glazed yet....)

I've only done one other piece bigger than this.  AND.... I finished this all TODAY.  Took me about 12 hours total.  Mini's and all just today.

A few other angles....

Close up of the Bear....

I fell in love with how the rocks came out . They were a last minute idea/addition just to fill some of the green space....

The cake is one of the first parts I completed today.  I'm pretty happy with it except my stinkin' FINGER PRINTS that I obviously overlooked... dangit!!....

Now the story behind this.....

My family has had their reunion on the 4th since my grandmother and her siblings started the tradition more than 65+ years ago.  That generation is long gone, and the tradition is carried on by the descendants of the Hysong Siblings.

Last year,  I lost my Aunt Mary.  She was a driving force in my life, and MY GOD, how she LOVED our family reunion.  My Mom is the only one left now -- both my Aunts have passed, but Aunt Mary was a great loss for me.  She was special.  I was special TO her.

She collected bears.  Every time I sculpt a bear I can't help but hear her in my head, cooing and ooohing over what I made.  She was like that with me.  I could sculpt something that looked like a steaming pile of dog poop and she'd still tell me how wonderful I was. That was just Aunt Mary.

Back in 2001, Aunt Mary's daughter Ann passed away.  I was close with my cousin.  SHE.... loved purple.  Everything and anything purple.

There are seven kids in MY faction of the family, so you'll notice that there are seven of the cupcakes on the platter.  There have been rifts among the siblings that several REFUSE to come to the reunion.  I thought that was a nice symbolic way to bring the seven of us together.  Dorky, I know, but that's how my mind works.

And a few of the cupcakes? Purple wrappers.  And the bear for Aunt Mary.

They might not actually BE at the reunion, but I can at least enact a few day dreams within the clay.  A few hidden gems no one else might even "get"..... but me.

Thanks for looking!

Have a happy and blessed 4th of July!

6  Christmas in June: IMG Heavy!! in Polymer Clay: Completed Projects by KatrinaBrown on: July 01, 2009 08:14:23 AM
No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to break away from the Ornaments!!  I did a little "baking" party and made some miniatures and last night decided some Bears should have an Ice Cream Social.

Here's a detail/close up....

Another one......

Here's a few shots of the Mini Stuff I made.  Most of it is waiting to be added to Critters yet to be sculpted......

Some Ice Cream Floats....

Cupcake Closeup.....

This one was my favorite Sundae.  I liked how the cup came out.  I had issues with my translucent darkening at the "base" of the sundae cup.  I found the FIMO translucent didn't darken or discolor as much as the Sculpey......

One final shot of all of them, a Penny in there for size reference....
