1  Butterfly Celebration Cake in Dessert by NostalgiaDeathmatch on: July 30, 2012 03:31:48 PM

So, I'm in a pastry/culinary arts program in college, this is my first celebration cake! I'm pretty darn happy with it, aside from the obvious flaws with some of the piping, but hey, I did it all by hand. Smiley

The top tier is painted with royal icing, the butterflies are scrapbook stickers (I originally wanted to make them out of pastillage, but it didn't work out how I wanted). The Monarch is dark and white chocolate. It's covered with fondant.

The cake itself is layers of vanilla sponge and coconut pound cake, then filled with a coconut pastry cream.

Okay everyone, PREPARE TO BE JEALOUS. I've received from the very awesome I Sew Cute, and she completely spoiled me.

First off, group shot! I received "Unicorn Farts" (AKA cake, pink sugar, and cotton candy. Smells delicious!) scented perfume AND body butter (which HAS GLITTER IN IT <3), a GLOW IN THE DARK (my favorite thing ever) unicorn wall hanging, the cutest unicorn plush ever, and a resin unicorn necklace that I'm never taking off again. Grin

The wall hanging

The necklace <3

I love this unicorn sooo much, she has the cutest proportions. Definitely my favorite.

Thank you so much, I Sew Cute!!

5  Strawberry Primrose in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General by NostalgiaDeathmatch on: February 22, 2012 04:01:46 PM
In Seattle, and probably everywhere else, it's really easy to find primroses right now. Since they're only $1, I decided to pick on up. When I bought it, it only had three blooms, but it's grown so much in just a few days!

It's cute, but kind of boring. So, I wanted to make some sort of craft to spice it up a little. Since the color of the flowers reminds me of strawberries, I decided to make these!

Tiny little felt strawberries (with seed bead seeds) attached to curled pipe cleaners. It kind of makes me super happy to see them dangling out of the pot like that. Smiley Really simple craft, but I hope you guys enjoy it~

6  Tiny Bird Spice Jar Terrariums in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General by NostalgiaDeathmatch on: February 22, 2012 03:53:20 PM
So, I got the book "Terrarium Craft" awhile ago, and right on the cover are these tiny spice jar terrariums that have moss and tiny birds on the inside. I'm sure you can understand that I immediately needed to make them.
I found all these cute little birds at the craft store, and they even had little tiny eggs! You can kinda see them in some of the photos, but, sadly these are better viewed in person.
They're a little hard to get a good photo of, but I have six total.

7  Unicorn Swap? in New Swap Theme Ideas by NostalgiaDeathmatch on: February 16, 2012 09:38:56 AM

Hey guys! Smiley

I've been on a serious unicorn kick lately, and it seems like Craftster is a pretty pro-unicorn forum, so why not start a unicorn swap?

It'd be anything goes; jewelry, clothing, plush, clothing FOR your unicorn plush, etc! I personally feel like making a whole mess of stuff, so I'm not really sure how many points it would be. Input? Ideas? Smiley

8  Sock Monkey Hat in Crochet: Completed Projects by NostalgiaDeathmatch on: November 30, 2011 01:37:32 PM
Hello again Craftster! It's been awhile. Mostly I just forget to take pictures for you, sorry.

ANYWAYS! Like most of you, I'm in the middle of crafting projects for Christmas gifts, and I just finished this one for my brother. (Actually the third gift I've gotten him, he's so lucky!)

So he has this recent obsession with sock monkey, which I don't really get (I think they're kind of creepy)...
Not to mention nearly all the sock monkey hats sweeping the stores right now are child sized (as with most of the patterns). Managed to finally find one, though! (found here; http://coffeecupthoughts.wordpress.com/2010/03/16/some-happy-hooking/) Sooo glad I decided to crochet it instead of knit, I whipped this up in two days. Smiley

I used Vanna's Choice yarns, all doubled up (except for the red band where white meets brown), so it's extra thick. I think the mouth ended up being a little too big, though...

Photo time!

Aaaand obligatory adorkable shot of me wearing it;

9  Wooden Koi in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by NostalgiaDeathmatch on: June 13, 2011 04:09:52 PM
Made this for my mom, who likes koi way too much.

She saw some really neat koi art at a local garden show, but it's all so expensive, totally not worth it. So, I found a 1/2" thick piece of wood in the basement, sketched a koi, cut it out with a handsaw, and then painted it with acrylics. It's roughly 14 inches long.

Dark background.

Light background.

Nose detail, still some spots that need to be fixed.

10  Mocha & Creamsicle Cupcakes in Dessert by NostalgiaDeathmatch on: April 05, 2011 07:17:10 PM
So the place where I work is doing an open house tomorrow, and they commissioned me to bake them cupcakes. They're also having coffee and wine, so I wanted to make things to go with those. Or at least try to.

First up were mocha cupcakes! It's a chocolate cupcake with coffee mixed in (had to do quite a bit to get the coffee flavor through), and chocolate chips. The frosting is a vanilla/coffee buttercream, and they're garnished with chocolate covered coffee beans. The coffee beans were in white, milk, light and dark chocolates.

Second, I couldn't really decide what would go with wine at all, so I just decided to do something citrus-y for spring. I don't really like lemon cakes or cupcakes, so I went with orange/creamsicle.

It's a basic vanilla recipe that I added fresh orange juice and zest to, came out super good. You can taste both the vanilla and the orange, so it's just like a creamsicle like I wanted it to be~ The frosting is a vanilla buttercream that also has orange zest and juice... hopefully the acids in the orange zest don't do anything bad to it. D: Like make it separate. Or something. It's garnished with a tangerine jelly belly. The swirl is made by brushing the inside of the piping bag with gel food coloring, so it comes out on the frosting. It worked better than I expected! You can kind of see how the color came out progressively, it takes a test cupcake or two before the color shows up.

Aaaand, a close up of the orange one, just so you can see it a little better.
