1  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Re: One Block Wonders on: April 17, 2012 06:20:26 AM
Thanks for explaining MareMare!  Both of these fabrics had a 12" repeat, 4 yards were used to get 2 stacks of 6.  Then those were cut into three 4" strips that were used to cut the triangles.  Each stack of 6 triangles becomes a hexagon.  I wasn't here for the cutting, but Mom says it went really fast and was easy.  She has been sewing clothes since I was little, so cutting fabric is old news to her, I think she was glad to do something where the pieces weren't all different!
The 4 yards worth of hexagons made either 3 or 4 extra, with a 10" border this quilt is  aprox 72x90 finished.

If anyone is wanting to try it, but is intimidated don't be.  Small flaws and mistakes are hidden REALLY well in this pattern.  Once it gets light out I will take some pics of individual hexagons that aren't perfect so you can see.  My one tip is don't sew all 6 triangles into hexagons, make half hexagons, then lay it out and you can make straight rows to sew together instead of trying to join hexagons which I'm told is difficult to impossible to do by machine.  Mom's little trick she tried with the second quilt - the tropical fabric was slightly over 4 yards, so after she cut the first 6 12" strips she trimmed an inch off, so the next 6 12" repeats were slightly different, ensuring that there was no possible way for any two hexagons to be identical.

We have a turquoise background fabric for the second one and are sewing all the pieces together right now, I'll post the finised quilt top when we are done.
4  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / My Mom's First Quilt on: April 14, 2012 03:46:33 PM
I just had to come brag on my mom a little.  This is the first qiult she has ever made.  She finished it a couple months ago.  She enjoyed it so much she now has 2 more quilts in the works!

I helped pick out the fabrics and arange the blocks, but the rest she did.
5  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / Re: 2012 Craftsy Block of the Month Craftalong on: March 22, 2012 06:30:26 PM
I'm hoping to make my January, February and March blocks in the next couple weeks.  I moved across the country, so I spent most of February and March packing, living in a hotel, and unpacking.  I still haven't set up my craft room since we aren't done unpacking the rest of the house.  Once it is all set up the blocks are my first priority.
6  POTTERY, CERAMICS, POLYMER CLAY / Polymer Clay: Discussion and Questions / Using wood with polymer clay on: February 06, 2012 07:50:41 PM
I searched for an answer to this, and couldn't find it, which surprised me.

I'm wanting to cover a wooden object with polymer clay and then bake it.  Has anyone done this?  Will the wood survive?  Will the clay be messed up from it?
7  HOME SWEET HOME / Pet-Related Crafts: Completed Projects / Re: Doggy Fleece Sweater on: February 04, 2012 06:13:43 PM
What a cute pupper!  Does the shirt pull on or are there closures on the stomach?
8  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Re: Lettuce Pullover in Mmmmalabrigo Twist on: January 31, 2012 06:33:56 PM
Beautiful!  I'm just barely a beggining knitter, but hopefully someday I can make things like this.
9  QUILTING / Quilting: Discussion and Questions / Re: Tire tread quilting on: January 30, 2012 06:43:24 PM
I like to do any marking before basting, I find that I have a harder time marking with the squishy layers together.  I have washable fabric pencils I got at Joann, I have blue and white for different color fabrics (you would probably only need white since your fabric is dark).
10  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Re: Doctor Who Jewellery on: January 30, 2012 04:17:10 PM
I like how it is all kind of a nod to Dr. Who, not terribly literal.  That is how I like my nerdy jerelry, looks like pretty jewelry to one person, but to someone who gets it it becomes something else.  The only things I know about Dr. Who are what I see here on Craftster, so to me this is all just beautiful jewelry.
