1  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Discussion and Questions / coloring pages as embroidery patterns! on: November 12, 2005 09:54:09 AM
in my google searches this morning, i've come across this site with free coloring pages for kids that you can print out.. i thought they'd work very nicely for an embroidery patten.. a lot of them have a vintage feel, but i wasn't able to look at all of them!

have fun!
2  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / i got the double crochet blues. on: September 13, 2005 08:53:51 PM
okay, perhaps i'm just dense (which is quite possible..), but i can't figure this double crochet thing out for the life of me!

i've looked at several tutorials online, and even the beginner ones are insanely difficult to understand with all the unfamiliar crochet jargon.

is there some magic trick to double crochet? i know i can do it once i figure it out, but golly gosh, it just isn't happening!

5  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Discussion and Questions / Champagne taste... floor lamp style. on: May 11, 2005 10:59:50 AM

i found this semi-gaudy, but beautiful floor lamp in a Design Within Reach catalog.. (which is super expensive..) but it seems relatively easy to make.

i was wondering if any of you lovely people had any suggestions on where i can find cheap supplies for the disks that cascade down. there's another variation of the lamp in the catalog that has stainless steal disks, and i kind of like that idea... but i also think it would be fun to have a color.. or maybe some stainless steal in with some transparent burgandy and some of the creme colored stuff..

so yes... any sites that sell cheap random junk that i can turn into such gorgeousness?

6  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Discussion and Questions / painting metal? on: February 10, 2005 09:37:16 PM
hey everyone...

i have a cigarette case that i want to paint and make pretty for my boyfriend who recently started rolling his own cigs. the problem is that i'm not sure what kind of paint to use on metal and whether or not i need to seal it.  would spray paint work? or acrylic? i don't want it to end up chipping off with the daily wear and tear.

any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks!
7  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Discussion and Questions / clear marble earrings? on: December 17, 2004 12:14:54 AM
i bought some of those clear marbles to make magnets out of, but now i'm wondering if there is a quick solution to hang these things to make earrings.

it seems like it would be very hard or very annoying to drill tiny holes into them... there must be another way!

any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!  Wink
8  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / For the sewing-inclined... (gift idea for anyone!) on: December 13, 2004 09:49:44 PM
For Christmas this year, I've gone a bit blanket-crazy.

I'm making a soft baby quilt for my little 15 month neice out of t-shirt knits I had laying around (I tend to collect more fabric than I could ever have time to do anything with!)... I'm just using 7"x7" squares and then piecing some stars and hearts and buttons on top of them to break up the uniformed look.

For my boyfriend I'm scouring thrift stores for old flannel pajamas (my boy's initials are "P.J.S" which I soon decided needed to be his new nickname "Pajamas"..heh) and piecing squares of them together with the same general idea as the baby quilt... just less girly.

I'm planning on doing some themed embroidery and dedications and stuff onto the blankets to personalize them further.

This could be done with anything you have lying around... sheets, pillow cases, t-shirts, pants.. anything you can cut up and sew together!
