1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Re: Bleached, Embroidered Upcycled Thrift Store Tees on: June 10, 2009 03:17:47 PM
What I've been doing is laying down the shirts outside (the bleach is toxic, so you want to be outside or in a really, really well-ventilated place), putting a plastic bag on the inside of the shirt so the bleach doesn't bleed through, and painting the bleach in. It's just standard, name brand bleach. The bleach eats through brushes, though, so I recommend going to the dollar store or somewhere similar and getting very cheap brushes, because you don't want your nice ones turning white and dissolving on you. Take frequent breaks, walking away from the work, and, if possible, leave them outside to dry for a bit. If not possible, when everything's set, take them inside and rinse them out thoroughly, washing them in their own load separately from your own clothes. (After that first load, they can be washed like regular clothes.) Hope that helps!

I'm not sure what's up with the old person smell. I think it's a mixture of mold/mildew and old people, and then the clean-smelling stuff just picks up that smell because it's infectious. I love thrifting regardless, though. Smiley

Wow, super-cool !!  Would love to see the details of the embroidered accents.  That is such a great idea to incorporate into the bleach design. Thanks!  You're a real inspiration. It's got me thinking of new possibilities with my own dyeing experiments.  Major kudos!

these are awesome! I especially like the pink one (even though I'm not a big fan of pink) and the black one, but they're all cute! What's the image on the gray one? and is the pink one a fairy? It's a little hard to tell with the angle.

The gray one is a swan, and the pink one is a giant lily with a stem and some leaves.

There are more pictures/details in my blog/etsy in my signature, if you want to get a closer look.

Those little heart buttons are the perfect finishing touch. The dress was too much dress, but as an accent skirt, it's stunning.

Gorgeous! I'm sure they love it!

They've been hand-washed directly after the bleaching, then later machine-washed to remove bleach and old person thrift store smell. I then later went in by hand and embroidered them. (Well, all of them but the geisha; she was clipped from a fat quarter and trimmed in lace, which is quite fun, I think.)

Thoughts?

This skirt is a combination of all of my favorite things, skirts, ruffles, stripes, purple, and a fine derriere! You're adorable. Great job!

It went from a bit blah to sexy, sexy librarian! Nice work!

That is precious! Happy belated birthday!

Thank you very much! The skirt was actually custom-made for that model. Her hair changes all the time, and sometimes she shaves it off, so you never know when I'll have to make her a new skirt. Wink
