1  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Buttoning/fastening mega bulky knit? on: September 06, 2015 01:17:05 PM
I just finished knitting a mega bulky cowl/wrap combo loosely inspired by Katniss cowl in Catching Fire and the Lion Brand District 12 wrap pattern (I didn't follow it exactly but the idea is more similar to their adaptation than to more faithful replicas of the costume). The scarf/wrap part were knit separately and are supposed to be sewn together. However, I love the look of the two pieces separately as well, and after spending so much time and money, Id like to have a versatile piece which I could wear as one Katniss inspired cowl OR detach into two different items and choose between them.

That brings me to my question. Is there any removable alternative to just sewing them together? Im thinking of sewing a row of buttons into each side of the cowl and little button holes on each end of the wrap part, but I used Bernats Mega Bulky Yarn and am not sure if buttons would be sturdy enough to survive wearing this piece buttoned together, without having it detach when I dont want it to. I definitely see myself wearing it buttoned or seamed together as the full District 12 wrap, so it would have to survive more than, say, one Halloween party, but I would like to be able to use them separately too. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Oi, any chance of reviving interest in this? I personally can't organize, but I thought this was such a cool idea - and so did a fair few other people. This swap idea deserves a second chance at life. Wink

Whoo, sorry to be so late with this BUT I am back from the dead (well, from the horrible 3-ish week flu I've had), and finally got a chance to photograph all the awesome stuff Myrdda sent me.

First, a super cool shadow box with little mementos from my fave episodes! XD

Then, this awesome mug that's almost as big as my face and that has Ten's quote about tea and Eleven's Geronimo! on the inside. I'm crazy about tea (and have been super sick, lol) so this is awesome. Myrdda also sent me this adorable Cyberman-esque tea infuser (again, super useful given my tea habit) and this beautiful bookmark.

A Vote Saxon t-shirt! I love the Master and hate politicians (worked in a non-partisan capacity in Parliament for a while, lol) so this is super appropriate to my interests, plus it's a great shirt!

And apple jelly, which is delicious.

Myrdda, thanks so much! The mug and tea infuser are currently in use right now, along with my TARDIS mug that I picked up a few months ago - I need multiple mugs for multiple flavours, lol. Seriously, thanks for spoiling me so much with such awesome stuff!

Yay, Myrdda, I'm so glad you like the stuff! It was awesome working with you - and I did receive your package as well but have been ridiculously sick and am now out of town. I will try to post pics Sunday or early this coming week - thanks so much and I hope you and your s.o. enjoy the Doctor Who goodies and jelly babies! (I'm actually really not a big candy fan, but got introduced to jelly babies through this fandom and they're actually so good, lol!)
5  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Doctor Who Round 7 Swap Sendouts 10/1/12 on: September 27, 2012 07:39:53 AM
Oy, I really thought the deadline was later in October for this - yikes! Happily, though, I've done a couple smalls, a medium and a large, and may even have time to pop some extras in. I will probably send out on the deadline (now that I realize when it is, i.e., this coming Monday, lol) but should have no problem meeting that! Smiley

This episode was a lot of fun, in that wacky exuberant way I love about this show - and yes, the kissing scene was awesome, lol.

As for crafting, I actually have much of my large done and it is sitting __ing on my floor. I also started one possible medium just now, or may do another 'medium' instead (or both - the plan is a work in progress). Smiley

Oy, I know I've disappeared for a few days, but I've been fighting a migraine all week AND fighting university cafeteria-induced food poisoning (never eating there again) AND starting grad school.... yet still found time to craft some smalls. I also picked up some materials for what will probably be the medium and the large, and have been catching up on Torchwood for inspiration. Smiley

Sent in my questionnaire a little bit before - but somehow forgot to mention River Song as one of my favourite characters, lol! (I remembered her when I went into say hi to the cat and said "hello, sweetie," my new standard greeting for cats - and for my boyfriend!) Oh well, I look forward to being paired with a swap partner and getting started on the crafting! Wink

I agree - ker_pow, I lurked on Craftster for years before posting anything, and then just started posting this past fall/winter because I wanted to join the last Sherlock Holmes swap. It went surprisingly fast and I had a great swapping requirement - so come on in, the water's fine, and welcome! Smiley
