1  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re:T-SHIRT SWAP (sign up: CLOSED ; mail 4/2 & 4/23 on: April 21, 2004 07:09:37 PM
Hello folks!

I know that some blank shirts got to the designers later than expected... and later arrival meant less time to work on the shirt... So no sweat not meeting the deadline just please let me know this and get the shirt out before the end of the month.... Smiley

I'll be the first to admit that my shirt will be going out Monday, for this weekend will be the only spare time I have to finish it up.... Tongue
2  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re:scarves and other stuff! on: April 20, 2004 03:32:24 PM
Now this topic has got me wondering.... What would you call something that may not suit the purist level of "handmade" but it is also not mass produced by big machines in a factory somewhere?

I may be the only one, but unless you got some uber fancy computerized knitting machine that required little to no help in the operation... I would still consider the scarfs to be handcrafted or even handmade... While I do not machine knit, I have noticed some of the machines require much more help in operation, from a living being, than one would think... I may be totally wrong on this one, but in my brain I've always thought of machine knitting as sort of like weaving, in theory at least... lol

I've noticed many mass produced objects that liberally use the terms "handmade", so I'm not going to knock something as being "handmade" when it is quite possible that the creator did a much more hands on approach than any big factory has ever done...

As far as the term "hand knitted" goes... I have also noticed many big companies liberally using that term... Though I am far from an expert knitter, it has always been my understanding that hand knitted applied to the use of two needles or circulars... In the end I think a lot more feathers would be ruffled if the term "hand knitted" was used vs. "handmade"

but that is all just IMHO Wink

I got a box full of wonderful crafty surprise yesterday, from deliriousdream...   Grin

I can not imagine getting a better swap box, everything is fantastic and will definitely be used! Thank you so much Elizabeth! Grin The box made my day!!

The pictures do not do the yarn color justice... The one on the right is sort of a deep military green with bits of brown... making for a very earthy color... The left is sort of a dusky blue... Both are very fuzzy feeling!

I got more than enough of this pretty fabric to use for several projects... I predict tops, skirts, and handbags in my future!

5  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re:Worth it? on: April 07, 2004 08:27:50 PM
Well any thing I make myself I find worth it, no matter what the cost/effort is...

I mean where else can I obtain items that are totally unique and suited exactly to my tastes?

One time I was out shopping for purse handles I was a bit miffed to find that the handles alone would cost more than it would cost to buy a handbag from a place like Wal-Mart... but I quickly realized the bag would be better than anything I could ever find at such a place...

That is just one instance of course... I found that I keep my costs in general down by using parts (handles, clasps, etc) that I rescue from bags I buy at garage sales/thrift stores for a few bucks... Such places are also good for finding interesting fabric and clothing to recycle into fabric...

Being a bit creative, you could easily put together a bag for under $10....

A lot of the same ideas apply to clothing too... I find a lot of my materials at thrift stores and I keep my eyes out for when Jo Ann Fabrics does their pattern sales (like all Mc Calls 99 cents, Vogue $5, etc.)... and even if you were to go all out and pay full price for everything... You still can not compare a well made, custom, garment to something you could find at a bargain store...

6  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re:ANYBODY INTERESTED IN STARTING A CRAFTSTER MAIL ART RING? on: April 07, 2004 06:52:53 PM
I'm missing 3 cards... J/A/S/O/N, alea, and tentimeszero... Seeing that others got ones from J/A/S/O/N, I'm assuming my mail is just being slow with that one... and most likely with the rest too...

I'd like to publicly apologize for being either a) senile or b) just a plain idiot... I could of sworn I posted when I got my gift... lol, but I had a crazy week... Then I got a PM from kategirl and I was like "oh crap"... So I'm going to blame it on my temporary insanity.... I'm so sorry pearliepie!!!! *hugs*

I really loved my gift... I got a picture frame with pretty flowers... A journal covered with a collage of images to create sort of an island tropical theme... A whole slew of xerox copies of various crafty articles, a neat mix cd, a cute iron-on patch, and a book of Mad Libs... Which made me think that pearliepie must of been psychic, for how she of known I loved Mad Libs so much?

Thanks so much for the gifts and I'm sorry again for being a dork about posting.... *hugs* - Rox
