There's a fabric store in port chester too, Nimble Thimble, on putnam ave, just off king st/120A. It's little and more geared toward quilting/calico type stuff... but it's not too bad. And then there's the Kate's Paperie in Greenwich CT which is only a few miles further on 120A to Greenwich Ave. And there's a couple of fancy pants yarn shops in Rye. I never even bothered going in because I figured I wouldn't be able to afford anything.

*waves* Hi! I went to Purchase too (graphic design) and I used to live in Rye Brook. Now I'm in the city. Westchester really stinks for art/craft supplies.

Will you be my friend?

I keep trying to hint at people that I want them to make us stuff for their wedding gifts, but I don't think my friends are that crafty.

Ok, but on the topic, this is a great idea! I'll have to make some for myself!
3  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Re: make your own buttons? success or failure? on: May 16, 2004 08:36:42 AM
Sculpey buttons will be fine unless they go in the washing machine. I had something with sculpey buttons and it was fine the first few times through the wash, but after a while the buttons completely disintegrated.

If it's something that would be handwash only anyway, then I say go for it.

Are most of these fabric stores in the garment district open on saturdays? It's hard for me to get down to the city during the week (I live in Westchester), and I need to get wedding dress fabric! I know a lot of stores are closed for the sabbath.

I'd go to the hardware store or Home Depot and look around. I'm thinking something like caulking... some sort of sealer. They might be sort of smelly though.
6  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Re:Please help, need advice on making cigarette umbrella on: March 22, 2004 07:45:10 AM
I found this on Ebay, is that sort of what you're thinking of? I was picturing something larger in my head.
7  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Discussion and Questions / Re:Origami baby booties on: March 20, 2004 06:01:04 AM
I've seen similar origami models to these in books before... I can't remember exactly which one though.

I'd check your library for origami books, there's usually a few at least.

I love it. This has reminded me of the utter absence of fringe in my life.

Check out the Church of Craft, they meet once a month at a cafe at 6th and Spring. I've never been, but they seem like cool folks.
