1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Sake related gift for friend turning 21 on: January 08, 2006 08:45:49 PM
my best friend is turning 21.  she's not a drinker and doesn't plan to be but we have a big obsession w/that nasty japanese alcohol.  it mostly stems from our love of Rouroni Kenshin (anime show if you don't know) and Kenshin's master, Hiko (who drinks sake constantly).

I would just buy her some sake as a funny gift for her birthday but
1. her mom would freak out (living at home w/controlling parents due to lack of money to move out).
2. I'm not 21

so, i thought, i could buy her some sort of sake jug, but pottery can be expensive, missed chance to buy some sort of sake-related pottery at world market, blah blah blah.

here i am, back at school again, stranded in little old town in missouri trying to figure out what to get for her birthday in a week. bwt she lives about 7 hours from here.

any ideas on something to make that would remind her of our little joke about sake on her 21st?

2  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / oriental ottoman on: June 07, 2005 04:09:22 PM
I made this red ottoman out of a half of an old speaker box from my brother's car.
I found this red quilted material in my mom's ginormous scrap box, and despite my lack of upholstery stills, i managed to staple the material snugly around the box.   Mom and I sewed a cushion for the top.

i put Japanese symbols on it using iron-on transfers.
we still  haven't sewed the cushion on to stay, because i get so much good out of it without the cushion sometimes.
at school this year it was my diner table, art table, step-stool, what-have-you.

oh hooray for the messy dorm room.
i sort of did all my design projects on the thing, even the ones involving paint.
3  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Discussion and Questions / fortune cookie collage on: April 27, 2005 10:30:38 AM
i've been saving fortune cookie fortunes for a while in hopes that i'd be inspired w/something to cover them in.
i just dunno what would look good covered in fortune cookie fortunes.
i do have a printer shelf that would be easy to do, after i collect enough of these things...
Just hoping some of you can give me some even better ideas.

or mayabe i shouldn't do a collage but scatter them on something, or do a really organized looking thing, or do something else with them.
let the brainstorming begin
4  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / aladdin genie lamp incense burner on: April 11, 2005 11:32:20 AM
i just realized i should post this project, i will put a pic up as soon as i get one.
in middle school i started burning incense.  one day i was thinking about this awesome toy i had when i was a kid.
on of those dumb genie lamps from the Aladdin movie. it works like an 8ball. except it gives you answers from Genie.
well, i realized i could melt a hole in the end of it and put a stick of incense in it.
i eventually found it.  i took a paperclip and a candle. held an unbent end of paperclip over the fire and pressed it into the center of the spout.  did that multiple times until i had a hole deep enough and wide enough to hold an incense stick.  it works pretty well!

only problem i have is finding something to put under it to catch the ash. suppose i could just face it off something into a trash can, but i wish i could make something that goes with it to catch the ash.
i wish it could just stand alone, really wish i could get into the hollow insides and hollow the entire spout, but it would be a bad idea to burn incense INSIDE something plastic.
5  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / the Brother who has everything cause he buys it for himself on: December 10, 2004 09:23:59 AM
Angry my brother is crazy.  he's mr. stuff. he's got a government job doing computer things.
