Crap! I missed the 4-6 weeks part too. I've had my kit since the beginning of February and just got my machine back from the shop so I only have the rows sew together and haven't started the other ones I wanted to make & send :-(

It could be too busy with polka dots but it might not be. The biggest determining factors on the busy-ness would be: 1. how big the skulls are and how prominent they are on the background and 2. how big the polka dots are and whether they are tone-on-tone or majorly contrasting colors. Also, how much of the polka dot fabric you use and it's placement could make a difference too. Take your current fabric with you to the shop and see what it looks like with polka dots. I also found that if I photograph it an look at it later, sometimes I notice something I miss. I did that with a design layout that looking at it with just my eyes it looked OK but once I looked at it on my computer screen, I noticed things that my eyes missed, especially with how the fabrics played together.

I like your black & white with an accent color idea and the layout you drew out is nice. Are the bold black lines going to be a different fabric or are they there just to show where the seams are?

Totally unrelated to the discussion but my birthday is also on the 27th so I am her "birthday buddy"! You still have a couple weeks to get it done :-) It seems to be a popular day, I share it with my husband's cousin, a friend, a friend's brother and others.

Fun!  I have another friend whose birthday is also the 27th.  It's a popular day.

No more progress on the quilt.  I had a sick kid this weekend.  Ugh.  Maybe this week...

I haven't made any progress on mine either! I just got my machine back from the shop last Thursday, the same day I left town for a friend's wedding. And my lazy butt did no sewing since I got back either. You'll get to it eventually :-)

I quilted mine today.  Just need to bind it and wash and I am good to go.  I think I know what fabric I am going to use from my stash.  Before I start on my extra I need to finish up my daughter's quilt.  I told her I would have it done by her birthday on the 27th.
My name is lame, I just named it "kung fu panda" because that's what is on the novelty fabric they sent.  Tongue

I went to Joann's on my way home and the prepackaged batting is 40% off (at least in Tucson!). It wasn't listed in the ad I got in the mail, unless I missed it. I forgot to check how long the sale lasts. Some of the stuff in the ad was good through this Saturday (3/13) and some is good through next Saturday (3/20).

I used some heavier weight fabric for the back of our couch quilt. (It matches our throw cushions and we had covered our dining chairs with it.) It worked great as the back and gives the quilt some nice weight and warmth. Since I live in Arizona, I used a lighter weight batting in it but it still works for most seasons (except summer, nothing but minimal clothing works for summer).

I grabbed my mail last night for the first time in over a week and I had a new Joann's ad that started yesterday. It's full of coupons. I haven't had a good look but I am sure there is a 40 or 50% off coupon in there. Check your (physical) mailbox or sign up for their emails!

Also, for those of you without a Joann's, maybe you could approach a manager or owner and explain the project. Bring your pattern and info from Quilts for Kids. See if they will give you a discount on the batting. Can't hurt to ask, right?

Hooray!

I ordered my kit last month after reading the initial post. You can see the fabrics I was sent here: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_DpysKpfyLFw/S2iSQsYeanI/AAAAAAAAAaY/DVtp4GEg63o/s320/quilts+for+kids+1.jpg.  I was busy with work and class (working full-time and getting a master's degree full-time has really cut into my quilting time!) and I finally started working on it over the weekend. The pattern provided is super easy and the precut fabric makes it even easier! But...

I got all my blocks sewn together into rows and pressed and walked back to my sewing machine and my feed dogs stopped working. Just wouldn't work even though they had been working minutes earlier. Machine is in the shop now and needs a new gear. Super frustrating because she was JUST in the shop in early December and had 2 of her 4 gears replaced!

Anyway, I can't wait to finish the quilt once I have my machine back! I never thought to do the binding in the way described in the directions (using the back fabric and folding to the front) but it sounds easy and makes more sense so IV's do not get caught on the hand-stitched binding like I normally do.
