1  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / leatherbound journal on: February 28, 2011 07:52:37 PM
Last summer my family had to throw away an old leather couch. Most of the leather wasn't too badly worn from use, so we salvaged all that we could before hauling it out to the curve. Shortly there after, I went to a renaissance fair and saw leather bound journals, which gave me the idea to make my own using the recycled leather. I didn't get around to it until after Christmas, but such is life.
This was my first attempt at book making. Rather than follow one specific pattern, I decided to improvise, and learned a lot during the process; like the importance of measuring. It would have been much easier to bind the spine together if I made sure the stitching of each booklet matched up.

In progress, binding the booklets together:

2  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Iron Phoenix on: January 04, 2011 04:31:50 PM
I completed this sculpture back in August, and just found the pictures of it again while making room on my camera. I had a more elaborate base planned, but had to simplify it to meet an art show deadline. It wasn't selected anyway.
long story short, its named Phoenix because it emerged from the flames.
Questions, comments, and criticisms welcome.

3  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Another Lord of the rings swap on: June 22, 2009 08:34:00 PM
i know there have been Lord of the Rings swaps before, but i dont think there have been any virtual swaps before.  My girl friend and I are both members of crafster and we both play Lord of the Rings Online. Those of you who play know that some of the best items in the game are made by other players. So my idea is that there could be a swap ,where physical items are made as usual, but then one or two in game items would also be exchanged.  Of course this wont work unless there happens to be enough people who play LOTRO and are craftsters.
4  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / 1st blacksmithing lesson Image Heavy on: May 09, 2009 09:01:30 PM
I just started taking lesson from a local blacksmith, here are some pictures from the first lesson.
The curled and twisted parts came out rather well. However the widened part got burned and got marks all over it and the tips have blatant hammer marks
If there are any other smiths out there who could give me any advice or ways to improve, it would be appreciated.

Also I wasn't sure where to post this. If it would be more appropriate elsewhere, please let me know or move it where it belongs.
5  FIBER ARTS / Dyeing: Completed Projects / Lab made dye on: April 27, 2009 07:44:33 PM
In chemistry lab, we made dyes by soaking fabric in one chemical, then in another, so the dye itself actually formed around the fibers instead of first creating the dye then dipping fabric in it to make the color. Because the dye is formed around the molecules of the fibers, it is very permanent.
The octopus was done by first soaking in one of the chemicals, then painting it on with the second.  The rest is tie-dye.
This is actually the dye that is often used to make the red in the American flag.
Also, the dye looks like the blood from Sweeney Todd when it is in a flask.

6  NEWS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT CRAFTSTER / Introduce Yourself / Hello crafty people! on: April 22, 2009 08:00:01 PM
Hello,
I finally joined Craftster, after several months of my girlfriend trying to convince me to do so.  i have helped her make some of her jewelry and we give each other new ideas for projects.
I tend to make more artistic projects than functional ones, but i do like to make practical things when the arises.
Hopefully i will be able to post some iron working projects after i begin lessons this weekend
