1  FIBER ARTS / Felting: Discussion and Questions / Re: Felted Slippers on: November 03, 2009 07:51:09 AM
Here's a link to making a boot/slipper template:  http://members.peak.org/~spark/FeltBootPattern.html

And here are the instructions for making the slippers: http://members.peak.org/~spark/3-dFelt.html

I just finished two pairs of slippers and a pair of mittens using these instructions.   Grin

Here's a tutorial for a felted rose: http://www.ingermaaike.nl/index.php?/archives/266-Tutorial-on-how-to-make-a-felted-rose-on-a-posable-stem.html

...and another flower tute from the same site: http://www.ingermaaike.nl/index.php?/archives/39-tutorial-for-a-silk-and-merino-flower.html

Hope that helps a bit!   Grin

Ah, thanks for linking that post, that's a beautiful piece of felt!

I'm curious what kind of wool you used?  I certainly couldn't sleep on a pillowcase felted from corriedale, but I'm thinking that extra fine (21 micron or less) would be soft enough for daily sleeping use.

This is definitely something that I want to try but with all the Christmas gifts I wasnt to make I might not have time to try it until after Christmas!   Roll Eyes

I'll post my results at any rate.  Cheesy

Whew!  Speaking of hectic...  Cheesy

For some reason I didn't get notification of any of the replies here other than the latest one, so I'm sorry I haven't replied earlier!

The lattice scarf sounds great for a next project for me...I'm planning to make one for my husband as a Christmas gift in various brown tones only I was planning on making the striping much denser than usual so it wouldn't be quite so "open".  So I guess that will be my felt-along project!

Omigosh, I've so many projects planned and so little time!!  lol  I've got lots of merino, alpaca and angora on hand now and I'm just waiting for the loan of the drumcarder from the local spinner's guild and the arrival of my acid dyes from Dharma and then I'll be in fiber heaven!!  Cheesy

I'd love to see a pic of that headdress, northstephens, it sounds fabulous!

So should we post our felt-along pics in this thread then, or should we have an official thread?  And do we just post finished pics or do we post wip (work in progress) pics too?

Eeee...can't wait to get started!!  Hee hee!

Lately I've been mulling over the idea of felting a pillowcase for my sleeping pillow.  I LOVE fuzzy pillows to sleep on and although I've seen many decorative felt pillows I haven't seen one meant for the kind of use that a sleeping pillow would get.

I would use the softest possible wool of course: merino and alpaca (and some angora if possible) and I'm considering the possibility of nuno felting it to add a bit more strength without ending up with a really thick pieces of felt.

Has anyone else done such a thing?  How did it work out for you?

Congratulations on getting married, northstephens!  Good idea to find something else to occupy your time after the craziness of wedding planning is over!  Are you going somewhere for your honeymoon?

Janedoe:  I could go along with the lattice scarf idea.  I've been wanting to give that a try anyways.  The other idea I had was wet felting over a resist like a bag or a hat.  I'm wanting to make myself a summer shade hat from some lovely wool/mohair roving I bought from an Etsy seller.  I was thinking of using this tutorial, which I don't see in the tutes post:

http://scrubberbum.typepad.com/moth_heaven/2006/01/ladies_start_yo.html

It looks like a great tutorial for those of us who don't have (or can't afford!) a hat form.

Something else I've been wanting to try is felting those glass blobs into the wool.  I've seen it in several places, some where the glass was left in and others where the blobs were taken out leaving "bubble" in the felt and I just can't figure out how it's done.  Maybe someone who knows could give us brief instructions and we could go nuts with it?  Wink

Another idea is the felted balls...maybe we could have a felt along where we all make some of the balls and then figure out some way to use them other than just making a single line necklace out of them?

Er...so now that I've narrowed down the ideas somewhat...  Grin

Yes, the response has been somewhat underwhelming so far, hasn't it?   Grin

Ah well, I can felt along with just northstephens if necessary.  Tongue

My goodness, I've been so busy that I had totally forgotten about this!  I'm definitely still interested as well as I've managed to squeeze a bit more felting in (between running after 1 and 3 year old boys) and I'm definitely hooked!!

Sorry for not replying to you earlier, northstephens...I meant to and life got away from me!

Hoping more people respond!  Cheesy

Hi all,

I'm a brand new felter and I've been lurking around the site for a few weeks now.  So far I've dabbled a little in needle felting, wet felted a scarf and wet felted a cellphone case.  Did I mention I'm brand new to felting?  lol  I've done quite a bit of polymer clay and wire and chainmaille jewelry but I'm really finding that I love felting.  The feel of the fiber is just amazing!

It's been very interesting looking at all the wonderful work posted here and I've really enjoyed looking at the past felt alongs.  Just wondering if there is another one planned for any time soon?  I'd really like to participate in one!
