1  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: 2009 Secret Santa Wish List Swap Discussion & Gallery on: December 28, 2009 07:04:24 AM
I've only recently arrived home from Christmas traveling and was welcomed home by a package from thatkid with wonderful gifts inside! I'll snap some photos today when I've recovered a bit more from jetlag.

Thank you!

I received a package from my Secret Santa two nights ago, but this is the first time I've been home to finally upload the photos I took...

The magnets nearly migrated to the  refrigerator before I remembered to photograph them! They're cute little marbles with Christmas themed images. The smaller goodies were all wrapping up inside the cute Christmas tin when I received them.
I'm particularly excited about the tiny kitty cross-stitch kit; I haven't cross-stitched since I was a kid, but I remember loving it, and it will be the perfect thing to kill time in airports and planes when I travel to Florida next week! Also, he looks just like my kitty-cat who lives with my mom! Sa-weet!

This sweet bracelet is definitely coming along with me on my trip, and will likely be making an appearance at Christmas Eve dinner along with my red 50s vintage dress.

Thank you, Secret Santa Lindyv321!!!

That butterfly art is gorgeous! I like the earrings, too. I have a pair of scrabble initials, but I'd love to find coin earrings.

Gorgeous!

Your distressed silk roses look super classy and couture. What a wonderful way to add character to a relatively plain (but beautifully fitting) gown. And congratulations!

Pinokeeo- that pendant is beautiful! The book looks like a wonderful treasure, too.

Onyxnox- I don't have a yard in which to place a birdfeeder, but I'm still jealous of the birdfeeder you received. It's really quite stunning, which is not how I would have ever though to describe a birdfeeder.

I saw your post and thought, "I read the perfect tutorial for this somewhere.... Google-time!"

There's a great tutorial on bust darts and burdastyle.com that should help you out a lot for future projects. Happy sewing!

Hello, I'm Jen. I'm 22, and I live in San Francisco, CA with my lovely boyfriend and my boyfriend's many books. We're skipping the normal Christmas present exchange this year in my family and instead we'll be spending the holiday at Disneyworld (so I wont be doing any X-mas decorating this year). My hobbies are sewing costumes and apparel, drawing & painting, repurposing old furniture, and occasionally I do a bit of crocheting and embroidery. I also love baking cookies, especially cut-out sugar cookies. Things I love: the colour teal. Unicorns. Manticores. Shinkansen. Mid-century vintage fashion and decor. Playing dress-up.

My wish list...

CRAFTED:
Cozy gloves/fingerless gloves/mittens
Decorative hair accessories: pins, barrettes, headbands, fascinators
Cutesy/kitschy refrigerator magnets
Pin cushion
Needle book
Small wall art: cross-stitch, embroidery, painted, anything!
Large shopping tote with long-ish strap(s).
Mint scented bath products, especially bubble bath

SUPPLIES:
Sprinkles and/or interesting cookie cutters for baking
Small embroidery hoop
Embroidery floss
Buttons
Ribbons or trims

OTHER:
Homemade gingersnaps (I'm no good at making these, but my BF loves them)
Surprises!

Lovely! I wish I had a plethora of these! Growing in San Francisco is tough: sandy sandy soil. What sort of plastic did you use to line it? Is it just something sort in large sheets in the hardware store? And how did you attach it to the box itself?
10  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Re: Help!! Can you help me with this fabric? on: June 07, 2009 11:57:13 AM
There is polyester fabric that mimics dupioni, though not horribly well. It's available at most big fabric stores like Joanns. It has a satin finish on the wrong side, and side with nubs that isn't as shiny or irregular as real dupioni. I'd just stay on the lookout for inexpensive dupioni (or on sale). I've managed as little as $9/yard for some really nice dupioni at a local place in San Francisco. I've also seen a selection of silk dupioni at my local Joanns priced at $16/yard which would come out to $9.60 with one of their frequent 40% off coupons. Considering the polyester version costs about that much at regular price anyway (about $10/yard), just go for the silk!
http://www.fashionfabricsclub.com has several silk dupioni selections for under $10, and fabric.com has a section for "promotionally priced" silk dupioni, with prices ranging from $6-11.
