1  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / baby hand & footprint cast and framed - *soo cute* on: December 29, 2004 05:07:02 PM
Finishing up my stay here at my nanny position – awwww (hehe!)

So thought I would give a little gift as a memento, hand and foot cast of the baby in a frame. Casting kits I looked at were really expensive!! So I thought I’d wing it and improvise Smiley

I picked up the frames at a cheap store, and turned them into shadowboxes by pinning the glass and the shadow board where they were by pushing thumbtacks into the inside corners at the front. Then I pressed four more in further to the back so there was some depth given to the frame. And the back sat further… well.. Back!

Anyway to cast her little foot/handprints I made some regular play dough and she pressed her hand and foot into it… took quite a while before we got an impression that was good enough to use!

I just used cheapo plaster of Paris to do the casting. The footprint was deep enough to fill in with plaster on its own. But I was afraid little fingers would snap off the hand if there wasn’t support so I made a square frame out of cardboard and pressed it in around the hand print before I poured the plaster.

When the casts were dry I carved some more detail into them, shaping up the fingers and toes where they had got all smooshed and fat. Painted them with grey acrylic paints then rubbed over the top with white so that the cracks etc would show up a bit better. Glued black card onto the inside of the frame backing and attached them with a couple of plaques I had made at the local trophy store and whoila!!

They look much better in person and its lovely to have a 3d little hand and foot in a frame instead of the print – looks sooo cute!!

I’m getting a good reference on my resume now!!
Yay!
2  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / super funky candy bracelet on: December 07, 2004 08:30:29 PM
G’day crafty peoples J

Just finished lolly bracelet, no sorry, I mean candy bracelet. Thought the idea might come in handy for someone…

I bought a couple of metres of  clear tube from the hardware place and a short length of smaller tube that would fit inside snugly. I cut enough to go around my wrist and a teeny bit of the smaller tube. Filled the fatty up with the sprinkles popped the little piece in as a joiner and ta-daa!

arent those sprinkles cute!

I’ve secured the join with some superglue to make it safer for the kids (I work as a nanny) and it is really secure – I tried opening one up to top it up and there was no getting into it!

The idea also works great with glitter and water, I’ve also made a set with much finer tubing and spices found in my kitchen – they’ve got beautiful earthy tones Smiley they look great half filled as it allows for much more movement…

i've also made one with sand and shells from a holiday beach as a momento of the trip..

Have fun, hope you like it Smiley

3  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / marble magnet inspired necklace (by first time poster) *added pics on page 3* on: December 07, 2004 04:13:39 PM
hi beautiful crafty peoples Smiley

this is my first time post so scarycited!! ive just spent the day making marble magnets after being inspired by the fantastic projects posted here.

i had a little brainwave on how to turn them into a necklace. it's all finished now and i think it looks pretty awesome! bear with me i hope these photos link up okay.... deep breath... here goes...

the marble on no.4 is upside down and the pink disk in no.5 is just a cirlcle of paper glued on to the back of the marble sandwiching the wire between the two layers holding it in there nice and snug.

here is my finished necklace, i used an old copy of the indian times as the background i love the antique look of the paper newspaper - i hope the articles are okay - i cant read hindi (if anyone can - let me know what this says!)

i made the chain just out of wire and a pair of pliers ( just the cheapest roll of wire and pliers i could find) just made a loop at the end of the wire, threaded the bead on and looped the other end... sounds a bit complicated -  if anyone would like a more detailed explanation on anything i'd be happy to post it here Smiley heres a close up...

and heres another one i finished last night.

hope someone out there can use this idea - and that the same think hasn't been posted already 100 times!
working on some different styles & bracelets etc - love to know what you guys think

yours nervously
