. Looks like for the satin stitch you keep the bevel of the needle facing slightly away from the direction of your stitches, and for the loops you want the bevel to face the same direction as the way you're stitching.
It also almost looks like the satin stitch and backstitch are worked from the front of the fabric, while the loops are done from the back of the fabric, but I really can't tell for sure.
PS - sorry, the PDF displays sideways. It's how it was on their site and my computer was unhappy when I tried to rotate it.
