41  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Simple quilt for my darling mother on: December 28, 2012 12:53:58 PM
My mom has been asking me to make a quilt for her for years and I've always been busy, but this year I'm not in the middle of baby quilts or anything that has a deadline. So in September I decided to make a quilt, in late November I decided on a very simple design that wouldn't stress me out, early December I bought the fabric, December 22nd I panicked and finally put the damn thing together almost in time for Christmas. My machine went on strike so I had to finish it at her house after she opened it. Whatever, it's done and she loves it.
I used polyester batting for the first time, I hate it and will gladly spend extra for cotton batting in future projects. I used symphony broadcloth from Joann's for the dark brown border and also don't care for that. It smells weird; and it feels weird next to the 100% cotton fabrics.

Here it is, not quite done, but done enough to wrap up and give her.

It was supposed to be a lap quilt, but ended up being about 65"x75". Too big for a lap quilt and too small for her bed. Meh.

Creepy Kitty wasn't happy that the quilt was taking attention from him.

And here it is, not quite done, but done enough to wrap up and give her.

***Update: I made this to match her living room and a wall hanging I made for her birthday so she could use it while watching tv in her favorite chair. Instead it's folded up at the foot of bed. She says it's too pretty too use. I know people mean that as a compliment, but it irks me when I spend so much time making something and then it doesn't used.  Angry

I just went through a bunch of crap to recover my email and password so I could tell you: I freakin' love it! It fits you so well and it's a perfect balance of sexy and cute.

"What are knitting?" I hand sew quilt and embroider....I don't know how to knit but I do know it look faaaarrr different from quilting... *facepalm*

I've been making fabric yoyos lately and I get that question aaaaallllllllll the time.

What irritates me most is older women in stores assuming I don't know what I'm doing. I'm 29 and i've been sewing since I was 5. Last time I went to the local quilt shop this happened:
woman: so, your first quilt?
me: no, i've made a few before. *take out the top that i'm here to find a border for*
woman: Oh, pretty! who helped you, your mom?
me: lol, um, no, no one helped me
woman: ok, when you find what you want bring it up and i'll fugure out how much you need.
me: hon, I've been sewing longer than your kids have been alive. If I need your help I'll ask, but i'm pretty sure i can figure it out.
woman: well, you looked confused and I've done this many times

I'd like to point out I've been there often enough to know that her son, kyle, dropped out of college because his gf, erica, is very controlling and always tells him what to do. (so she says) But they never remember me and always treat me like a flake. Sigh. I feel better letting that out, lol.
44  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Mother's Day wall hanging on: May 16, 2012 07:48:20 PM
Ok, so this definitely isn't my favorite color palette, but it goes with Mom's living room and she likes it so I suppose that what matters when you make a gift. Sigh.
Anyway, I made a wall hanging and a hastily sewn mug rug for her for Mother's Day. A week before I gave them to her she said "I have too much crap hanging up, huh?" and "I think I need to settle down with the butterflies, it's getting crazy." So, yeah. I think she liked it though, lol.

And I was inspired by other craftsters to make a mug rug for her too. I made it at the last minute and it's kind of crappy, but she really, really liked it and like a good mom she didn't mention the mistakes Smiley

I would also like to add that I saw this when you first posted it but I had to wait to reply because your make up freaked me out and I needed some time to collect myself lol. I mean that as a compliment  Wink

6 for a dollar?! I never find them that cheap. But that's probably good; otherwise my apt would be filled with them. Cute little outfit  Smiley

It's so cute and what a great fit! Did the bust darts do that weird pointy nipple thing? I can't get them to curve in anything I've attempted to make.
