I won a sock dying kit about two years ago but I never got around to using it. I didn't like the colors the kit came with (shades of mud brown, really?) but I had heard of dying yarn with Kool Aid. My mom was super skeptical that it would work but it did! Kool Aid Yarn
, on Flickr
It's three skeins of sock yarn, 100% wool. I used one packet of Kool Aid Fruit Punch for each skein and zapped it in the microwave for 2 minutes. The inside of the skeins are a lighter pink while the outsides absorbed more color. I kind of like how variegated it came out and that the three skeins are not uniform in color but still close enough to mesh well. I plan on knitting a baby sweater out of it.
Now if I could only get rid of the kool aid stains on my hands and countertop.
