I nuked it for over 8 mins nothing happened, simmered it for at least 10, nothing happened. What is going on!!

3  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Funky Smelling Yarn on: June 07, 2011 10:19:47 PM
I just inherited a trash bag full of yarn from a co-worker and it has a very unique funk. Upon further inspection it looks like most of it if fairly old some over 10 years old and very discontinued. Ive tried fabreeze but the smell is very persistent. Its not horrible like smoke or cats, its more like old books and dusty attics. Anybody have suggestions?

Ps- Almost all of it is acrylic
4  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Fiber Friday may 20th, 2011 on: May 20, 2011 04:06:23 PM
Its Friday its Friday!! My first ever fiber Friday. Ive been a lurker for over three years and I just finally stumbled upon a work buddy who just happened to have an ashford traditional that needed a place to stay for awhile and that happened to be my apartment. The following are my first attempts at yarn and plying on a real wheel instead of my drop spindle.

This is my first project is a mix of corridale and romney it was a total pain to draft because the fiber was so old and so tossled around it was almost felted all the way through. The resulting fiber is gorgeous but scratchy as hell variegated silver. It will probably make a handsome felted bag some day I managed to get 137 yrds in total!

My next test was 8oz. of Black Welsh Mt. The seller claimed it was natural black but as I started to spin it I realized all the VM was this hazy grey color so I was pretty sure it probably started blackish but they did a dye wash to even it out. This stuff was a pain to spin evenly I had to switch hand positions over and over just trying to get all the funny lumps to go away but the resulting look was uneven in an artistic way after plying. (sorry my camera sucks and its truely way darker than the photo.)

My favorite of the week!!! My spinning buddy have me about a softball size of this yummy crimpy cream romney roving and it spun up like a freakin DREAM. But it looked kinda boring on its own so I plied it with some of the Black Welsh Mt. and got me some zebra yarn!!! I can't WAIT to figure out what to do with it!!!

5  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Big Acrylic Mess HELP! on: November 05, 2009 12:38:50 PM
Okay so I was a total dufus and started spinning up what thought was wool. It was a gift so I had no knowledge of its origin.  I had spun nearly the entire chunk of it while I was sitting with some fellow fiber friends and we were musing about what it could be since it was so soft and the fibers were so short. Someone brought up the burn test and I felt so silly I hadn't thought of it before, and sure as yer knickers it was acrylic!

So! Now I have a spindle full of 100% acrylic and I'm not sure how to finish processing it. I have a feeling setting the twist with hot water wont really work unless maybe its boiling? Does anyone have suggestions? Maybe a hairdryer?
