1  Newbie Q - Hand sewn, applique goodness? in Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions by ashleywalker33 on: March 20, 2009 05:57:37 PM
Hello,
I'm very new to craftster and sewing in general. I have a machine that I can't use (yet) so for this project I'd like to hand sew. I have a two part query for all of the sewing geniuses here. Smiley

Part 1: I'm wanting to make a patch for a coat. I have a specific design in mind and would like to know the best way to create a patch. I was almost thinking of making an applique with felt (or something) with simple shapes I could cut out and stitch to a base? I got this idea from this pic on etsy.... << That's Posh Plushies on Etsy, btw >>

And I'd like my patch to look like Han Solo's Hoth jacket patch....which in case you don't immediately remember what that looks like, here it is: . So any help on how to make this would be wonderful!

Part 2: How in the world do I put this on my jacket? I don't know. It's made of a navy blue, woven sweatshirt like fabric but it's much thicker. And it's lined. So I know I can't sew through it (I guess?). My first (bad) idea would be to just glue it, but that seems too easy. So any advice in doing that would be helpful. I'd like to attach it on the chest where there are no buttons or seams or anything.

I know this is a lot to ask, I'm just hoping there is a kind soul out there ready to give advice to a totally newbie.
I've got all summer to figure it out, I just need somewhere to start.
Any help would be great!
Thanks!
-Ashley
