2  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Discussion and Questions / Looking for cushion help! on: September 26, 2008 06:43:49 AM
Hello!

I am trying to make a cover for cushions for an ugly chair. I can't find any tutorials online of how to make a box cushion. How do I get those corners right? Any advice?

THANK YOU!

3  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Anyone ever host or attend a yarn swap? on: March 02, 2007 02:38:13 PM
I've been running clothing swaps for years, and it all seems to even out. But I have been talking about yarn swap with my girls, and would love some pointers!

Anyone go to one or host one?

How would it work? Not all yarn is created equal. There are many yards possible, thicknesses, and then qualities. Could you do like a points system? Like if I bring two skeins of acrylic and one fun fur, its like 5 points, but one skein of hand dyed merino would be 4 or 5 as well. Then you can trade your points for other things? But that seems kind of involved....

HELP!
4  KNITTING / Knitalongs / Stash-Be-Gone-Along? on: January 22, 2007 01:48:56 PM
Like many of you, I have a ridiculous stash, and am trying to use it up before buying more yarn (exception: If you have a project that needs just a ltitle of something, its ok).

Right now I have one full plastic bin, two tote bags, one garbage bag (though all of that is for one blanket once I learn how to read crochet patterns) and one large laundry bag.

I've been making earwarming headbands (similar to pantas but not as extravagant) to use up a lot from my leftover Sienna sweater, and its usuing up a lot of odds and ends (awesome).

I plan on making a sweater with my orange andean wool, with lambs pride purples and greens as fair isle; a mohair sweater based on an Interweave sweater from the fall issue; a clapotis (again, trial number 3) from beautiful alpaca I got at Sheep and Wool. Not sure about the rest, but I really want to use up stash!

Anybody with me? I plan on taking pics of the offending fibers this evening. Smiley

5  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / How did it go? on: December 26, 2006 07:20:14 PM
Hey crafters!

Just wanted to see how everyone's holidays went!

How did people react to your homemade gifts? And did the holiday fairies bless you with any crafty goodness?

My mother loved her California calandar, didn't understand her keyhole scarf (kept pulling it too tight)... My husband loved his sweater, but the PJ pants were too loose and kept falling down. My dad seemed excted about my bath salts, but none of my girlfriends (who are knitters!) seemed too thrilled.  Dad loved his fleece blanket.

As for the crafting fairies, I got a beautiful dress form (i'm naming her Delores) from my folks, and a gift certificate to JoAnns from my sister in law. Mom picked me up the SnB daily calandar and my husband got me the moosewood cookbook, which may not be crafty, per se, but I think cooking takes plenty of creativity in order to work!

Happy holidays!

6  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Need a new idea for mom... on: December 12, 2006 08:30:21 AM
So I wanted to make her the cute slippers from One Skein... I casted them on and just don't like them at all. So I have two weeks to go and I'm freaking out.

I could knit her a mobeius scarf (we're going to NYC on Thursday so I can have her pick out pretty yarn herself), but I feel like I should get more for the woman who gave birth to me...

Any ideas? I knit, sew, etch (last year she got candle holders), generic craft... I'm open to new ideas! I'm making bath salts for my girlfriends...

The only crafts I have left to do is a sleeve and a half of a sweater for the husband, and making the bath salts...

Any help would rule!

7  New York / New York: NYC and Long Island / Anything Crafty going on this weekend? on: November 16, 2006 12:27:34 PM
Hey folks!

Im heading to NYC this weekend, my friends are playing in Brooklyn (Bar Matchless!) on Saturday. And I'm wondering if there are any neat craft fairs or things to do to amuse myself during the day? I plan on hitting the Bodies exhibit...

Anything?

8  KNITTING / Knitalongs / Sienna from Interweave? on: November 13, 2006 10:35:06 AM
Anyone up for Sienna from the Fall Interweave?

It's a pretty cardigan, knit on size 9s. I casted on last night using a nice dark red wool I picked up at the Sheep and Wool Festival for $2.50 a skein!

Anyone?
9  KNITTING / Knitalongs / IK Spartan (or Men's Sweater) Knitalong? on: November 07, 2006 10:04:44 AM
Hey craftsters!

I'm knitting my husband a sweater after all the boyfriends of our crew complained that they want one and have to wait until marriage.

So, he picked out the Spartan in Interweave, and I like it! Simple, but with Fair Isle (I've been wanting to try that!) to keep me entertained.

Anyone else want to knit it? Or we can do a knitalong for boy's sweaters in general?

I picked out the yarn via Knit Picks. I try to alternate between my favorite local yarn store (which has all my favorite hand dyed and pretty yarns) and online... but I came home with TOO much from the Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool festival to spend more than $25 on sweater yarn. Smiley
10  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / What's your favorite pattern? on: November 01, 2006 12:16:30 PM
I realized yesterday that I knit certain patterns over and over again without getting bored.

So what's your favorite? Why?

I love the cable hat in Stitch N Bitch Nation, and have made at least a dozen for friends and family. I've got one on the needles and another on the way. I just like the fit and the pattern's not boring!
