1  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / HELP! Shadow Boxes???????????? on: November 08, 2009 04:45:37 AM
Hi!

I have a plan for Christmas presents for my new nephew to be (7 weeks to go!) and my new cousin (currently 2 weeks old). But I can't find any shadow boxes that aren't $9 each !

The plan is to use one box per letter in their name, and then put one letter of their name in each box, and decorate/scrapbookify/paint the rest so it suits their nurseries.

I don't care if they don't look fancy, because I'll be painting them. I just want boxes around 15 cm square, and anywhere from 5cm deep. Preferably with glass on the front like this,

But in an unfinished wood, just plain old cheap balsa wood is fine. I can't find these anywhere!

Since I need to buy 10 of these, $90 isn't really an option because of the rest of the supplies I need.

Does anyone have any ideas? Oh, I'm in Australia, I've checked lincraft and spotlight ($9 each) and I've checked all the cheaper craft stores and cheapy shops too...

2  ASIA / Japan / Looking for a Pen Pal and Information for travel!!! on: June 10, 2009 10:48:19 AM
Hi!

I am kinda new to craftster, and looking for a pen pal also, I would love to have a Japanese pen pal, I would especially love one who could teach me some simple phrases, and who will indulge me in allowing me to write poorly written grammatically incorrect letters to them in Japanese once I take lessons.

I am hoping to travel to Japan next year for hopefully one month. We are wanting to visit Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka and Hiroshima. I will be travelling with my partner and a friend who lived and taught English in Japan for sometime a few years ago.

Here's a little (alot) about me. I posted this in a thread looking for pen pals but thought that this might be an appropriate place to post it to find a Japanese Pen Pal.

I'm 22, have been with my partner for almost two years, currently unemployed but looking hard for a new job.

Music: Everything, apart from rap, and pretty much all country. Some country is ok though! Current iPod popularly played artists, Lily Allen, Kate Nash, Ting Tings, Operator Please, Britney Spears, Garbage, Def Leppard, David Bowie, Feist, Sia and many others I can't remember. Please be advised that my ability to remember trivia (band members/song titles etc) for bands is rediculously limited.

Books: I'm a sucker for a sad true story. I love a cry over a sad book. I have just read the "Marked" series by PC and Kirsten/Kristen Cast, I found the story line interesting, and felt it had potential but the writing and language style bored me. I need to have normal everyday language, not something that is written to be like average teenagers but actually sounds like 12/13 y/o children trying to be cool. Massive LotR fan, like, MASSIVE, I used to remember ridiculous trivia about those books. I need to read them again. Guilty book pleasure : Twilight. I also love any fiction/inspired by true story books to do with South Africa, eg, Power of One and Tandia etc.

Colours: Bright ridiculous colours, not neons, unless it's pink. Rainbows, Black and Red, Aquamarine, Purple.

Television Shows: House, NCIS, Dr Who, Torchwood and Firefly, are my absolute favourites. I also enjoy, Desperate Housewives, Medium, Heroes. There's alot to mention.

Movies: I like alot of movies too... Some of my special favourites, Vanilla Sky, Unbreakable, All 3 LotR movies, Sin City ummmm... I like rom-com's, Drama, Scifi

Crafts: Mostly sewing, some beading/jewelery making, dabble in poly clay, love to paint, alot of misc crafts. I can't knit without skipping stitches or accidently making extras in a row, I can to plain crochet, I madke squares and rectangles, oh and I'm a champion chain stitcher.

Pet Peeves: People who talk with their mouths full of food, People who chew with their mouths open or generally loud chewers. Seriously. It's rude and gross and puts me off of my food. Go eat in the corner.!

Food: I'm an omnivore, I occasionally feel guilty about eating meat, but can't give it up. It just tastes too good. I went through a stage where I just ate chicken. Because chickens scare me and it makes me feel a little omnipotent being able to tell a chicken I'll eat it if it tries to eat my toes. I love Asian food, and Italian and Mexican, I am a little bit picky, and would love to extend my pallet, but unfortunately I just don't like alot of foods.
